The INTJ in the Workplace! What will they bring to your org?

Strategic, visionary, bold, stubborn and oftentimes arrogant, the INTJ loves to plan, brainstorm, and fix inefficiencies in existing systems.

I am an INTJ and have struggled to hold down a job in the corporate world because I simply don’t fit in. I often create solutions that get stolen by others and I get no credit, and in return I constantly hear that I come across as cold and arrogant when most of the time I sit quietly at my desk and don’t get involved with the office gossipers, office politics etc, and I am actually a very friendly, genuine person. Yes it’s true, we are very good at spotting inefficiencies, and I have had a habit of pointing many out at different companies, problem with that is that you make enemies that way, and they can work to get you out of the job. I don’t think INTJs are good fits for the corporate world. I think I will be a better entrepreneur. I don’t fit in with most offices.

I'm an intj and I think of a huge plan in my head and literally can't explain it verbally. I hate details too. Anyone want to give me a job? 🤣

I agree with a lot of what your saying except for the arrogant comment. Our confidence is often misunderstood as arrogance. In my experience as an INTJ female when confronted with a person mistaking me as arrogant, it's often a reflection of them trying to appease their damaged ego because they feel insecure. Not saying that INTJ can't be arrogant, but make sure you are being objective in your assessment and not just caught in your feelings because of insecurities. We can also be team players if the situation requires it, however it must be with a group that takes things seriously and actually contributes productively. Nothing worse than working on a team with slackers.

Joe I always have a hard time communicating my thoughts directly to a group of people. Though I have a vivid picture in my head I cant put it in words.

I wish companies would actually organize people based on personalities. It might be short sighted, but it would make things easier.

The weakness you are on spot Joe. It's amazing how I disregard some punctuations or inputting tedious tasks like working on a spreadsheet without thinking.

I always preferred to work alone, unless a team was needed. Just give me a list of work to do, an approximate deadline, & I'll get it done efficiently by skipping all the dumbass details that would slow me down. Never had any complaints about my work. Nowadays, I own & run a business myself. Much happier now.

As a INTJ- T I struggled with this a lot! In my past with Bosses. It was very difficult for me to keep a Job because of this inferiority complex that I couldn’t explain to myself why I felt this way! Now with so much information it starts to make sense!

Well, I am quick at figuring out how things are working in a work place but that doesn't mean I will try to fit in. Good video +1

I am a software Solution Architect (INTJ-A) here. I am 38, my MBTI friends often mix me up with an ENTJ as I think I am pretty mature for an INTJ, I am pretty well rounded, confident. That said, I have some 'quirks' that are black and white, non negotiable. If you have a crap work ethic, sloped shoulders or an ego at work, I will judge them by that and its hard to come back from that judgement. Egos, they're like a red rag to a bull for me, I will take them down quick if they are negatively impacting the group.

Noticed patterns in data, typos, errors jump out at me, I think people are often surprised by how quick I notice problems. A lot of my work is now strategy and I am much more senior. This is more for younger INTJs, my younger years in technology, I was (still am) very confident, but I approached everything with a hunger to learn, with a respect for those teaching me. I made the tea/coffee in the office, I worked closely with who was best on the software, so my start in my career was a very humble approach. I was also lucky enough to meet a much older man in my field who soon became a Mentor. Look for a mentor, difficult thing about mentors is they don't walk around with a badge on them saying "Mentor". The 'Mentors' that do, are often not capable of mentoring, they just like the title on their lInkedIn profile...

Now I am in to the experienced years of my career, I find my patience is pretty low for people bull shitting, getting political. I sit under the radar on all politics in the business, but I am pretty black and white, direct with my comments on things I disagree with. I am very vocal in work and will call things out on the spot. I do struggle with authority, more so when it is misguided or lacking the experience it needs for that title.

I struggled with my approach for a long time, not so much in the beginning when I was learning my craft, but the last 5-7 years as I knew I was wearing a mask to work. My advice would be, to not adopt a mask once you know your craft. Be you. Sometimes its an asset to show your teeth, especially in business. Work alone, be quirky, call out issues head on, I often was concerned whether this was disruptive but when it comes down to the crunch, your superiors will have you down as a no-nonsense, completer finisher who can get stuff done, on time and think logically instead of emotionally.

Fight procrastination, do not take on TOO much work, learn to say 'No', build breaks in to your day but not to youtube and google, to walk outside and follow your gut on your intuition - it is your strongest skill, do not take it for granted, the rest of them do not have this skill we have!

Yeah I have always sat in the background quietly outperforming others. Communicating how to make things for effective has been a struggle

My respect for "Authority" is Nil.
I also find I have a MUCH harder time getting my thoughts out when people are repeatedly interrupting or putting attention elsewhere. But I know listening to me can be like a class or lecture. And many people do not have attention span long enough, even if that person has mental capacity to understand the concept I'm spouting.

INTJ describes my teenage son accurately. This video helps me anticipate how to bring out his best and guide him to navigate group work at school. Joe, thanks!

I definitely agree. I am an INTJ. I finally found a place to work where people just let me be. I am a cake designer. I love it because I get me Se there. They pretty much leave me alone and let me do whatever I want. I will admit that I am a bit more rounded because of my 8 yrs in the Military.

I brought a CO2 meter to my office meeting room and it got to over 3000ppm, which makes people unable to think effectively. The facilities department got very annoyed when I pointed this out to them....?

I am rather obsessed with proper punctuation, proper formatting, use of styles in Word etc. I like emails to look clean and proper. There is beauty in that. Administrative tasks however I am really lazy with. I prefer to focus on the real work.

Omg, the part of 4 steps ahead (not just in emails) and not answering the question is so true. I’m actually pondering the future questions that will follow answer to the original. And answering those. This is why it’s so hard to explain myself to others. The first question I’ve already answered in my head and I’ve moved on. So when people ask me to backpedal and explain it’s really difficult.

I think you really missed the value of an INTJ. You speak as if an INTJ is an aloof dreamer with his head in the clouds. I disagree with this because, an intj has a drive to bring things to a practical fruition. The only way to do this, is to be able to work with people and communicate with them in a way where you can get your point across and everyone is on the same page. Yes we are big picture thinkers, and we do overlook details from time to time. However, I don't think missing some punctuation in a company email is totally going to forfeit the value of the idea. I think what you have described for the most part is an unhealthy or underdeveloped intj. An intj who is healthy knows his weaknesses and knows they need to be worked on because self-improvement and self-discovery is always an ever present idea in our minds. We not only look to make companies and systems more efficient but also ourselves as well. Another thing I have noticed, is you grossly overlooked how open-minded an intj really is. You spoke about being very independent. That is true, however if a task requires more than just a single person and or needs others to get it done then we will be open-minded enough to involve other people to accomplish the goal. Lastly, when it comes to authority, we can be a little bit obstinate. The reason for this is, intjs are masters of the skills that they have acquired. We often ask ourselves, how can one lead on a particular subject or circumstance when they don't have the knowledge to do so. It's not about the person, it's about intellect. Until next time.

You know, INTJS don't *always* want to be leaders. Because they are efficient -- and they have to pay the bills, an activity separate from their self esteem -- they want to maximize the time they spend with the least amount of effort, especially at "work" which (in a capitalist society) might not really jive with their vision. This is *why* they make great leaders, but they are many times reluctant leaders. This clip was largely perjorative, I felt, and not well thought-out. It's as if your basic premise for a personality type is their response in a social environment and therein, does their value lie (or not). As an INTJ, I say 'bullshit' and you don't get it. Call me stubborn.
