‘Listen to the people’: SA council cancels public consultation after banning Aus Day events

Sky News host Liz Storer says the Adelaide Hills Council needs to “listen to the people” after it banned Australia Day events.

The Adelaide Hills Council originally had planned to consult with the public to discuss whether they should allow Australia Day events again, but then cancelled it after a meeting on Tuesday night.

“This is ridiculous,” she said.

“One of the councillors had to put up a motion to be like ‘you know, maybe we should do our jobs and talk to the people that we’re supposed to be representing – how they feel about banning all events on Australia Day’.

“The rest of the council also elected by those people to represent them said ‘no, don’t give them a voice, we don’t want their opinions, it might turn out to be racist’.”

Any council that refuses to celebrate Australia day without asking the community what they want should be sacked.

Ban Australia 🇦🇺 Day .. we will still celebrate it.
Stay out of politics, stick to council work only..
Council, you work for us, not for you to decide on whether we shouldn't ban Australia day?..
Your stepping on a fine line..

Maybe the council should just arrange to pick up the rubbish and build footpaths.

I'm english but what I've seen of Australia on the telly & what a wonderful modern beautiful country & all in 200 years! What did the aboriginal population do in the previous 10 thousand years? Let me think, - - - -, duh, NOTHING!
So of course you should celebrate Australia day, your country fought against totalitarian regimes, it owes a huge debt to the people who founded the country, fly your flag with pride you've earned it! I'd raise a glass to Australia & I'm english, a pom, your auld enemy, lol!

All council members should resign for being stupid and divisive

The real problem is now most councillors are attached to political parties. Councils should be independent of political parties to truly represent their community.

Listening to the people, is not what councils think of doing in South Australia. They go on junkets to foreign land's where dictators rule for ideas of defiance of the people who reside in the state of south Australia .
Councils and councillors should be a voluntary basis the mayor also voluntary and held to the highest laws of the land. Working alongside the people for the people and comunity.

Next election get rid of them ... Australians are fed up with Australia becoming un Australia. The woke need to go and stop destroying the dood things we celebrate. Its not racist. MY experience is if you push things to hard something has to give, this is lack of respect for Australians and for those nationalised on that day.

Remove this council IMMEDIATELY. They are there to SERVE THE PEOPLE. If they are not going to do that they have NO RIGHT TO EXIST. Stop giving them money.

Reminds me of Scott Morrison when he changed the words to the National Anthem WITHOUT asking the Australian Public.... Australia Day is here to stay and we will ALWAYS celebrate it

A question regarding this, so would this mean also Chinese new year celebrations or any other countries day of celebration. not have any events . I doubt it, but it seems to be only Australia Day. If thats the case, why don't those who dislike Australia so badly just leave the country and go to one they love so much.
