History of Apple Proprietary Ports

through the years, Apple has featured quite a few different ports and connectors in their products. From USB in their older computers, to the lightening connector in todays iPhones. But most of the controversy surrounding Apple ports stems from their long history with proprietary technology. But even switching ports on new products is enough to ruffle some feathers. So in this video I want to discuss three connectors: Thunderbolt, Lightning, and Magsafe. But also talk about some controversial transitions from one technology to another.

The 30 pin connector for the iPods and early iPhones was really Apple's attempt at future proofing their devices. If you look at the schematics of the 30 pin connector, it had compatibility with all sorts of possible connections that were around at the time. (It could support S-video, of all things.)
I remember reading somewhere that either two or four of the pins were not connected to anything, they were just there to allow Apple to add compatibility in the future.
This seems a bit extreme, but you have to remember that at the time (2003-2004), USB was still relatively new, and no one really knew which computer connector would become ubiquitous in the future. We all know that USB would, but that wasn't really that clear at the time.

The magsafe port always impressed me as a kid, when I would unplug it a couple of times every time I saw a mac at the store, and it still does to this day. Why would you get rid of it? It is a brilliant idea

>Apple removing the 30 pin connector for more real estate to add more features

>Apple removing the headphone jack.

Well played

2016 was the year:
-Apple removed the headphone jack
-Made an Apple Pencil that sticks out of the charging port
-Made the Magic Mouse charge from the bottom
-Removed a TON of ports from the MacBook Pro and left only USB C
-Sold a lot of annoying dongles

They were doing something wrong that year

I really don't believe removing I/O options makes things more simple for the user. I'm for the idea of replacing old outdated stands with new ones, provided there has been a transition period, or the new standard is backwards compatible.

8:03 "first smartphone ever made without a headphone jack"
totally wrong, a lot of devices from PDA-era doesn't have headphone jack, and many early Android device like HTC Dream.

The omission of MagSafe was a great mistake. I can understand with iPhone free space is highly important but with MacBooks that is not so important. MagSafe could survive and many damages could have been avoided with MagSafe.
