The operating system that powers every Apple computer is called MacOS. And if you haven’t used Apple products for very long, you may not be familiar with the operating system’s history. The first version was released in 1984 and completely changed the computer industry. Similar to how iOS on the first iPhone completely changed the smartphone industry. But the history of MacOS spans a number of decades, which has resulted in the operating system appearing and behaving much differently today than it had over thirty years ago. So in this video we’re going to explore some of the biggest transformations and most dramatic moments MacOS has experienced in its lifetime.

Thanks to MacPaw for sponsoring this video!

I love how Greg's voice is perfect for things like narrating a video

6:30 "The aqua interface, while visually appealing, was a resource hog." Sounds just like Windows Vista

MacOS and iOS were actually fundamentally very similar from the very beginning. They shared almost the same kernel and most core libraries were exactly the same. One real difference is the user interface, which makes total sense to be different on small touch-based device. One way to combine them is to include both graphical interfaces into the same distribution which will make both systems bloated and doesn’t make any sense. I am not sure there is another way, so, I would not wish for these systems to become the same one.

I love Apple explained but this video kinda felt unstructured. I thought you would talk more about Mac OS X version instead of skipping through more than half of them to talk about the sponsor

You didn’t talk about the huge redesign from mavericks to yosemite!

I know this is a history of Mac OS, but no mention of the Lisa, even in the part where you erroneously state that the Mac was the first consumer device with a GUI? That was the Lisa, not the Mac, and while the Lisa OS wasn't the same, the Mac OS certainly used some of the same concepts and benefitted from the development of the Lisa OS, which was the first GUI outside of Xerox...

Excellent video Greg, I loved every single second of the video. It’s ok to take longer time to upload a video, but please make it like this one 10/10 👍🏻👍🏻😊

1:24 "The introduction of a graphical user interface changed everything. You no longer needed to understand how the computer worked, you simply used the machine intuitively."

Tell that to my mom.

you seriously just skipped over snow leopard like that? Snow Leopard remains the best version of OSX period, if it was still secure to use and had app support, I'd happily continue using Snow Leopard as my main OS... spaces in Leopard/ Snow Leopard was hands down the best desktop management system of all time.

Greg missed so much on transition to next system. This was the most important point in the history of macOS. The main feature was writing applications for the system, it was (and still is) the most developer friendly environment, featured friendly high level object model and great tools for developers. Windows started to fall behind (after next acquisition) and was behind for years. It did kinda catch up only with Windows 10, which is quite recent operating system, and still behind in some features like memory management or hibernation.

Keep up the great work Greg!! I’m definitely a big fan of your channel and I’ve learned a lot about Apple since I’ve started watching your videos. You should do a separate channel for Microsoft explained.

That's probably one of the best ad transitions I've ever seen, going in and out.
