Is Homesteading EASY? | Pantry Chat

We're hoping to clear the air about the misconception that homesteading is EASY. While we don't maintain that this lifestyle is easy, there are aspects of it that have become second nature to us, so in a sense, yes, it's easy.

There's much more to it than that, and we genuinely believe that though homesteading may be difficult at times, it's most certainly worth it.

My husband and I purchased our new homestead 9 years ago at age 65. We have 5+ acres on a small lake in Georgia. We have a well, love having our own water on our property. We both worked at major corporate jobs b4 we retired. We are now 74. We have learned to grow many of the foods we love. When we buy in store to fill in other foods we buy organic. We have learned many things about growing and always learning and adjusting. It's worth it. Veggies from the garden are so much more flavorful than store bought. I have learned much from Carolyn on canning. I wish I was younger so I could do more but We have also taught our sons how to grow food and that is inspiring. ❤

Homesteading is a lifestyle. When you work 8 to 12 hours a day at a job you generally buy ready made foods. Homesteading, in my mind, is your job at home for the most part. This is where you now put your energy into providing for your family. It's not easy but it's healthy. You still have to work to survive it's just a diffrent type of job.

We left the city! On 2 acres cleared. Lots of work but SO WORTH IT. Peace and quiet. Space for shop house garden animals etc. And we are over 66+ enjoying North Idaho! Beautiful country and normal people!

Going back to basics. Walking and useing a spoon was hard, until you learned it.

The steps are easy. But it is a lot to be the teacher the baker the candlestick maker. Also the doctor, the farmer, the engineer, the mechanic, plumber, electrician, nutritionist, artist, musician, writer, ….. a life time learner.

Homesteading is probably the best way to make a family and community more resilient in the event of any personal, local or regional emergency. The first response is always the most local response in a health family, community, region.

Priorities and expectations. Be realistic. Also, realize that you work your way up over time on everything you do. I didn't get 5 children all at once. As each one came I adjusted. I trained to them to be part of a family. I could not walk in to Carolyn & Josh's and take over managing their family and homestead. My children all came out very successful. Very productive and good for society. But the biggest success is that they all still believe in God and still go to church.

Great discussion!!! You've created a lot of questions for individuals to ask themselves. A great springboard to setting goals. Personal goals. Health goals. Decisions on what knowledge / qualities you want to instill in your children. Goals to set for your family unit. I have already recommended this discussion to others!

Congrats on the magazine! A very good podcast. Easy is really a subjective term and although there are aspects of living this life that make you want to throw up your hands and walk away, the reality is that it is just a moment in time. But those less than favorable moments are fewer than the good moments. Having lived this lifestyle for multiple decades, I can say that at times I was not the norm but I kept going because it was important to me. One can certainly say that at times, this lifestyle will challenge you physically, mentally, emotionally and monetarily. But in the end when you are through the storm and things that were hard are now easy, the reality is that it is truly a blessing! The food that you grew/raised is pretty good too!!

Love the Homestead kitchen magazine! Absolutely beautiful publication. Such great points made about how it's so important to teach our children's these skills as well as nurture their value and abilities. Thank you for all you do to teach your years of experience and skills. God bless you and your sweet family.

Delayed watching this video, till I could sit and enjoy after a busy few days. As always a great video, looking forward to the homesteading course, I’m sure it will be amazing. I’m somewhere between the start and where I dream we can go, while we are raising and educating our family. I think teaching and learning, values, responsibility, and without a doubt a love of creating a lot if not all we need. Building skills and sharing surplus, with others, together. Nothing you can ever buy beats a life with purpose and intension. Happy new year to you both ☘️

I love that you have created an actual magazine. I worked in newspaper about 30 years ago. I spent about 9 years in newspaper starting in my early 20s. From stuffing newspapers with sales papers, delivering, to advertising, then working as society/school reporter, to editor. Seeing newspapers disappear to just digital versions has broken my heart. I so love to see you bringing things back to pre internet times!

I appreciate both of you so much. You are an amazing example for all of us, and I wish more people would learn from you and apply it to their lives where they are.

God bless you and your beautiful family.

Great video! Homesteading can be challenging at times. I live alone on 10 acreas plus work full time, plus all the traveling time back and forth to work. At times I feel so behind on things. It is not easy, but nothing worthwhile is easy. I am almost 63 and just raise chickens for eggs, have a garden, grow herbs, forage what I can. I am a late learner. There is something about picking fresh herbs or growing my own food including berries.
Things are expensive. Just yesterday, I was at several stores and certain things were crazy.
I have my housecat that was a stray over a year ago. She is great on getting mice.
I got my copy in the mail yesterday. I love the ideal of having a copy on hand. I do not have a computer - my phone is my computer, tv, radio, camera, etc.

Thank you so much for such a great episode. I really enjoyed your focus on getting back to family values such as hard work, thrift, and, cooperation.
I feel like sometimes people are chasing the gold at the end of the rainbow in order to get rich and not have to do anything. Hard work has great rewards. While it may not be a sack of gold, the benefits of good health and self reliance are possibly of greater value.

Nothing is easy. 🤷‍♀️ We had a large acreage but my husband felt more overwhelmed than I did. Now we live in town and I feel we are working just as hard as ever. First year for a freeze dryer and doing more pressure canning. Love your videos and thank you for sharing your family with us. God bless!
