Finland joining Nato increases risk of wider conflict, says Russian defence minister

Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s defence minister, said Finland's accession increased the risks of wider conflict.

In an address to the leadership of Russia’s armed forces he also said that Belarusian jets were now capable of carrying Russian nuclear missiles, a development likely to ratchet up tension.

Do not attack your neighbors and there will be no risk. Of course, it is not pleasant for Russia that the alliance is expanding, but, honestly speaking, who is to blame for this? Until 2014, NATO was slowly but surely turning into a political alliance with demonstrative military exercises once a year. Putin is personally responsible for the militarization of Europe, because he started an unnecessary conflict and in 2022 brought it to the point of absurdity. The fact that Finland joined NATO did not bring the world one step closer to a third world war, quite the contrary. After all, as we see, despite all the bravado and loud statements, Russia cannot oppose anything to this except threats to use nuclear weapons, for some reason always forgetting that after that it itself will be wiped off the face of the earth.
