Does the woman need to be present to make it valid or is it adequate for the guardian presence and wali approval

I don't understand how most scholars say it is permissable? Marriage is a once in a life time opportunity which you want to share in person with your loved ones. Then you have the hadith of Valima which should be done as soon as possible when the Nikkah is performed. This Sunnah of the Prophet is fully neglected. Most people who do Nikkah over the phone, do it for the purpose of then later do another cultural wedding and take your wife abroad straight away. This all goes against the Sunnah of the Prophet!
