Broken Lid Switch Washer Repair - Kenmore or Whirlpool

Always unplug your washing machine before you begin working on it. The lid switch is a very important part that should be replaced and not bypassed. There are obvious dangers from running a machine with the safety switch and many news stories of tragic results involving children. I noticed videos on youtube showing how to do it and it is not something that I would feel comfortable sharing with others because I know many people will permanently bypass it and I don't want to be the one who told them how to do it when something goes wrong.

Hi Adam this is Eva. I am a disabled 61 year old trying to save as much money as I can living alone. I had the same washer and ordered the same part. I was able to get it done. It took two days though. I will not cuss but that ground wire screw was a pain. At least I know now that I will struggle with it again some day. You are my hero. It took me long because I needed a 5/16 socket and ratchet. I had to wait until my brother in law could get my father's for me. But job is done and now to get back to clean clothes. Thank You so much for the help.

I fixed my washer with your instructions. I kept my phone handy to review as I went along. You saved me $400-800 thank you!

I just did my repair this morning and it didn't take long at all. I didn't use the adjustable wrench. I used a 8mm socket wrench and it worked great. This video is very helpful for all DIY people like myself. Thank you so much for this repair video. I'll keep your videos in mind the next time I need to fix something.

Thanks! This helped a single woman be able to fix her roper washer lid switch herself! ☺ It was a bit of work trying to get the grounding wire unhooked, but easier than when I replaced the water pump. So happy I did not need to move my washer out to get to the back screws....that was what I thought was going to be my biggest challenge. No moving!!! YAY!! Thanks so much!! (This saved me a bunch of $$$!)

Thanks! This worked for me. Mine was an old Kenmore (made by Whirlpool). Only had to remove 2 screws on the lower front panel to to lift it up and disconnect the wiring harness. Most difficult part was getting the ground screw off---used the wrench as you suggested but hard to work it when you can't see it!! Now the spinning stops when you lift the lid. Back in business 👍 👍.

After watching your video 2x's, and receiving the part, I just finished the installation on our triplex's Roper coin op machine. On the old switch was a small piece of steel shielding. I was delighted that this little piece indeed snapped onto the new <$10 part! Also, the ground bolt/screw was easier than I thought to access and worked with an 8 mm box end wrench that I happen to have, likely really a 5/16" English size. I hooked up the ground wire first thing, so as to have nothing obstructing my hands and view. Thanks again. So far, on this machine, I replaced the coupler twice, the clutch assembly once...each time watching youtube videos to both diagnose and fixe the problem. What a long lasting machine! Test run was a little unsatisfying, as the lid would not activate the cycle unless it was lowered firmly. The plastic depressor piece doesn't look worn, and could be lengthened, but a new one is likely cheap and certainly easy to install.

Thank you so much for making this video. I needed this exactly since my washers lid switch broke and was not 100% sure how to replace.

God bless.

Man thank you so much for this, I'm a new homeowner and figured I should try fixing my washer myself just so I know it's done. This helped a bunch!

This video helped me with looking and assessing what was wrong with my washer. The lid switch had come apart into two pieces and was no longer able to be activated. Took the switch out, put it back together, reinstalled, boom fixed. Thanks a lot!

Any way to pop up the whole lid to make this easier?

Your video really helped me out today, thanks!! You explained it well and the fix went smooth. The only thing I did differently, was spliced the ground wire. I cut the old ground wire and spliced on the new ground wire with a crimp cap. Then I zip tied the ground wire it to the gray wire sheath to keep in in place. Thanks again.

Thanks. Used your video as a guide and the washer is up and running again. Tip for others is to use a 8mm gearwrench on the ground screw to make it less difficult.

Did it! I watched one video that recommended disconnecting hoses, pulling machine out, and removing the cabinet. I decided to try your way first, and even the grounding screw was not as bad as I'd feared it would be, although it was threaded opposite to the righty-tighty/lefty-loosey mantra. Thank you.
