Once had a squeak. I sprayed wd40 on crankshaft. Somehow caused slippage and damaged the crankshaft. $1, 500 repair back in 1987 on a 1982 celica

Scotty is correct here. I was told by an industrial supplier of belts
and transmission equipment that ANY product you put on a rubber belt will ultimately shorten its life. Dry only.

Replace belt every 3 years
Tensioner as needed
Never any sprays
Carry a spare belt and tensioner in the car at all times

I found a old belt kit in the back of a used car. It was from the days we had multiple belts. It was adjustable in its day. It had a adjuster that used screws to make it the size you needed as a temporary replacement for a broken belt. Sadly it was already cracked from age, but a cool find either way.

Idlers/tensioners wear out too. They have bearings/springs and these get old and or worn out.

Serpentine with WD will attract dirt little tiny particals. Get imbeaded cause odd noises. Or use a wire brush on the belt carefully. The noise dissipates the belts dryrot

Only use WD-40 for two things. Driving water or moisture away from metal to prevent rust. Or to degrease and wash away grit and dirt, since it's mostly solvent and very little lubricant, it's not great at lubrication. A drop of 3in1 works better.

If you need a lubricant, WD-40 company sells a can of silicone spray.

One other WD-40 tip. Use it to dissolve and wash out grease and oil stains that won't normally wash out.

Belt dressing could be used temporarily (and I mean maybe fo ra few days until you replace the bult, but not as a "Fix"). I had to do this on a road trip with my Honda which the power steering belt was slippinga nd making it hard to steer. The belt dressing worked enough for me to drive home over the next 3 days and then replaced the belt and all was good. But I wouldn't use belt dressing as a permanent fix or "long term" fix (for more than say a few days or a week -- think of it as a "spare tire" you wouldn't drive on it for long periods of time, just enough to get you home so you can get it repaired).

I put marvel mystery oil in a crank case on a dirtbike one time and learn the hard way that you need friction in certain places that liquid Molly additive soaked so deeply into my clutch place. I could not catch a gear if I wanted to😂😂 OK it wasn’t that bad but it definitely slipped and it was just fine before lol

Bad pully can make noise also. I replaced mine in my ranger before

One other problem that causes belt squeal is debris buildup on crankshaft pulley

Back in the day when I started working as a mechanic in 1970 we didn't just randomly continued to tighten a fan belt you use soap on it once you get it back down to that half inch deflection

I used to work at Chesteron, based in Houston. They make belt spray for industrial machineries and automotive.

Wd is a oil, and belt dressing will deteriorate the belt after a while. Both are a no-no. I've seen so many belts come in that people have put belt dressing on and the belt was literally shredding apart. Wd will stop the noise for a while but it will come back sometimes worse bc it makes the belt slip. And it could also be bc of the belt tensioner not holding tension on the belt.
