The Myth of The Best Adventure Motorcycle!

What you really need to know before start traveling!
I keep talking and talking, but seems like no one really listens! People keep asking me, what will be my choice, Yamaha Tenere 700, KTM 790 or Africa Twin? In this video, I will bust the myth of the best adventure motorcycle!
What is the purpose to buy light dual-sport bike if you always liked big and powerful touring machines? Just because someone told you that they are great adventure motorcycles? Forget about it, what is good for one could be a nightmare for another!
Many of you think that I am some kind of GS hater, no absolutely not! They are great bikes, but not for my type of trips! I said it many times, but I am going to do it again:
“The bike is just a tool, the travel is what really matters!” You can travel with any bike as longer you have the will to do it! The adventure means different thing for the different people.
I have some close friends who don’t really have the free time to travel, but they love to buy stuff and make plans and you know what, this is absolutely fine! There is no difference between me and them, don’t you agree?
Yes, I want to travel the world, but you my friend, yes, exactly you might want something different, for example touring the Alps. Do you think that we need the same bikes? Of course not!
You have to understand one very simple thing: There is no one universal motorcycle to perform perfect in any situation or terrains! The ultimate adventure machine is only a myth and it is a matter of time to find the limitations of any bike and rider.
The motorcycle reviews I usually make are just to show you that every bike has pros and cons, not to convince you that one is better than another!
A powerful engine, great suspension, ABS, traction control and any other systems are there to help, but they cannot ride the motorcycle. That is your job and it really depends on you how far the adventure will go. Any bike could be an adventure bike because the adventure is a state of the mind not of the bike! Once you accept that things become easier!
Stop listening to these great experts that keep telling you that without their product you cannot make it and take me for example! I did all of my trips on very simple motorcycles with minimum gear. Do you think that because of that I enjoy it less than the guys with fancy bikes and expensive gear?

“ Adventure is a state of mind not the bike you ride “. Well said Pavlin 👍

Can’t agree more. “The best adventure bike is the one already in your garage”.
People keep telling me that my Honda NC750X is not an adventure bike. But I have an adventure every time I ride it!
I know who it right and who has been swallowing the motorcycle media hype.

You are so right ... Let me tell you a personal story: Before I get my motorcycle licence, I had a Lifan 50cc moped. I loved that moped for it's simplicity and very low fuel consumption (1.3 liters/100km outside the city). Still I wanted to travel longer distances with it so I tried a 350 Km trip for 2 days...it was one of my best trips in the mountains with it and it was great fun! So it really doesnt matter the bike you drive so much as the trip!

I rode heavy 350cc Enfield for couple years.. Only went 50, 000kms!
Switched to 100cc commuter, made some mods, already at 20, 500kms from 6 months!!
Now I can tackle all city traffic and cruise @60kmph all day enjoying the scenario on my trips with commuter; rather than getting tired at traffic & worrying about performance - mileage - service - spares with costly brands!
(Plus suspension on commuters are very good)

To see more, to go on trips more - what you have is more than enough!!!

Hello. Back from Spain where I had a lot of fun and emotions, riding wonderfull roads in fantastic mountains. For that trip, my bike was BMW R75/6 and my friend was riding a 250ETZ from MZ. These two bikes are very good adventure bikes. nothing to tell more. No money was spent buying "adventure" garements and equipements.
Minimum tools, sparkplugs, tubes, bulbs... just had to change a fuse on the BM. Just had to learn few words in spanish. three weeks of pure motorbike, pure adventure, pure human meetings... Which bike next time? Certainly, it will have two wheels and a motor. I don't know yet the color. Szia Pavlin!

So true you don't need a high end latest & greatest bike with all the bell & whistles to enjoy adventure 👍👍👍

Depends on the type of your adventure. You can take a goldwing on the single track. A GS to the farthest starbucks. A harley to sturgis. 150cc to explore rural Vietnam. The list gors on. So whatever floats your adventure boat.

For me the best adventure bike is the one I can afford and keep.
New V Strom 650 XT and I am very very happy with her !!
Thank you Pavlin!

Can be any type of motorcycle, you have to actually do it. I've been on an adventure/ camping trip accompanied by a Vespa

Well said.
Some years ago, a guy did a trip from Sydney to London on a 110cc Honda moped. So there you go, it's not the bike, it's the rider.

Nice and wise words, so grounded and true. I've had so many different brands and types during the 36 years of bikeriding. And I always say "This one is the best ever!" Which it is! Why buy it, if not?

A lot of us may be in the situation where we don’t have the freedom to travel yet. Kids, work, family may be holding us back and we look to guys like you to live vicariously through you. I am planning for the day my boys are older and I can get away to do trips again. In my 20s I did a 3 week trip across most of Canada with my best friend. He rode an older cheap Ninja 500 and I went on my first real road bike, a BMW Funduro. Some of my best memories and if we had fancier bikes. I would not have enjoyed it any more.

Now as I dream for those days again, I am rebuilding/restoring another Funduro I bought for $1100 a few years back. Blown fork seals, old tires, and carb pieces in a plastic bag. Gives me a great opportunity to learn the bike again as I take it apart and renew many of the serviceable items. Hopefully after this winter I have it like new and running. Ready for some 2 day adventures. I think for lots of you dreamers out there, this is a good way to hold you over and start your adventure. Find that smaller simple bike to fix up and get to know. Then just start riding. And the day you have the time for that bigger trip, the bike is waiting for you in the garage.
