It was astonishing how in the theatre you could literally feel all women being moved and feeling themselves so represented, it was a special moment.

I was absolutely shook when I heard this in the theater. In 2.5 minutes, it totally summarizes and eviscerates the bizzaro-world standards women are held to. If America Ferrara does nothing else, she will be deservedly remembered for delivering this speech. Bravo, Greta Gerwig.

The best decision they made with this scene was leaving out the background music. All of the power of the moment went to America, no one and nothing else

The pure fact that so many woman were moved to tears by the raw truth of this speech, tells us just how much it needed to be said.

I watched Barbie in theater in my German hometown. During the speech, you could hear a pin drop and when it was over, some girls behind me started applauding. Most of the audience joined in, including me and my sisters. Barely ever did I feel such a strong sense of sisterhood and understanding with a bunch of girls and women I didn't even know. Whatever people say about the Barbie movie, I can only thank Greta for speaking so strongly for women in western societies and giving me and so many other girls the feeling of sisterhood and of being understood.

btw, sorry for my English. as I said, I'm German.

I cried and cheered when she was done after I heard her speech, I am so disappointed that the writers for this movie didn’t get the Oscar for this movie this speech alone was worth getting the award because it really speaks volumes about us women and it makes me so proud to be a woman. Barbie made even me a plus size woman feel beautiful and better about myself.

This speech will never die no matter how many blockbuster films will come

The biggest twist of my life was discovering that the generic mother who appears in the Barbie movie is Astrid's voice actress in How to Train Your Dragon.

I saw this film with my mum in the theatres. And when we came to this speech. I looked over to my mum & she was crying. I will never forget that.

I am a woman and I agree to this 100%. I also have nephews and when I look at them I notice how it can be impossible to be a man too. They have to love their kids but not too much or they’ll be seen as a mom. They have to be strong, but not too strong or they’ll be seen as jerks or if they are not strong enough they are not real men. They have to like sports and nothing romantic. They have to work hard to support their family but not too hard or it will seem like they don’t love their family or if they work too hard they’ll be seen as absent fathers. They have to treat their daughters and sons differently and if they are not the stereotypical son and daughter, people will think there is something wrong. They have to want to do housework but at the same time not like it or they’ll be seen as being whipped. They are not allowed to cry or have feelings or they’ll be made fun of.
My nephews are sweet and kind. They cry and one of them plays with dolls. I worry how the world will see them, but at the same time, I’m proud of them. I acknowledge how hard it is to be a woman, because I am a woman and it is so damn hard. But I realize that it can be hard to be a man too. The social goals society puts on women and men, it’s just so sad and like America says, I am so tired of it.

i think they did a great job casting America for this part.
especially for us girls who grew up knowing her as ‘Ugly Betty’, it truly captures the way the world is run at the expense of women and how they SHOULD represent themselves or else they’ll be unworthy.

who knew a movie about a doll could have such an impactful statement that a lot of people looked over.

It was so quiet in the theater during this speech. I was sitting there thinking, why have we put up with this for so long?

Barbie impacted me more than I thought it would. I remember watching that BTS shot of Barbie being assaulted in the L.A boardwalk and punching the guy and thinking "Great, another cashgrab of a movie." And then the trailer came out for it, and I saw all the hype and thought "Okay, this will be fun!" So me and my boyfriend dressed up as barbie and ken for the premiere. I remember how people came together wearing blonde wigs and pink dresses. I remember someone yelling "Come on barbie, lets go party!" In the crowd and all of us laughing. I remember the cheering of the crowd during the title card. I really wasnt expecting to have as much fun as I did, but I did.

And then I took my sister to see it. I was fresh out of therapy, and struggling with my purpose. I can remember crying like a baby during the "What was I made for?" Scene, laughing with her during "Im Just Ken", and talking about the movie on our way home on the bus.

The other day I was in the throws of insecurity, and thinking "Nobody looks like me. I feel so alone and unlikable." And immediately, without warning, my mind thinks back to this scene. This monologue is so important to me, and every single woman. Someone remade it in the comments from a mans perspective. And im sorry, but you dont get it. You never will, the system isnt rigged against you like it is us. (This isnt an excuse to be transphobic, trans women are women.) And in the points it is rigged against you, thats still the same patriarchy we're fighting against! Why do you think you cant show your emotions? Why do you think mens suicide rates are so high? Because of toxic masculinity.

As a 50 year old white dude, I was gobsmacked as I watched this. In the moment, it was apparent what was happening and what the message was: she was the every-woman. I appreciated the way Greta presented the content throughout the movie. I.e. it was clear & concise but not out of proportion or too “in your face.” Applause to the writers, and major props to America for delivering such a poignant monologue.

When I watched this in theaters with my best friend I did cry. I saw in this speech all the women in my life who I've watched struggle with these very same issues. It was nice to see this acknowledgement of the insane unspoken rules society has on women. America Ferrera did such an amazing job and this speech will live on forever.
