Barbie - Women Speech (America Ferrera)

Powerful 'Barbie' Monologue About Being a Woman.

"It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong.

"You have to be thin, but not too thin. And you can never say you want to be thin. You have to say you want to be healthy, but also you have to be thin. You have to have money, but you can't ask for money because that's crass. You have to be a boss, but you can't be mean. You have to lead, but you can't squash other people's ideas. You're supposed to love being a mother, but don't talk about your kids all the damn time. You have to be a career woman but also always be looking out for other people. You have to answer for men's bad behavior, which is insane, but if you point that out, you're accused of complaining. You're supposed to stay pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much or that you threaten other women because you're supposed to be a part of the sisterhood.

“Not only are you doing everything wrong but also everything is your fault” - I felt that!

My cinema went dead silent during this scene; like you could *feel* just how hard this was hitting people. It's a powerful and raw monologue and America Ferrera delivered it perfectly.

People don’t know how hard other people try to fit in, screw being what people want you to be, be the person you know you are.

Oh sweet America, I could feel her in my chest towards the end. It's raw and hopeless and overwhelming.

I haven´t seen the movie but that speech sums it up what women face pretty much anywhere in the world, one way or another.
And I´m sure there is a speech for men that has to be said as well.

Sometimes, it is just frustrating and you want people to simply listen.

I think that each gender has its own problem, and the hate the Barbie movie gets is based off the fact that the movie is a female point of view- hence the speech. If it were a Ken giving the speech, it would be the problems that men face, and that would be fine too. Both sexes have their own problems and unrealistic expectations and grievances, Barbie just talks about the woman’s side of things. Chill out y’all. 😂

And this only scratches the surface. You're not allowed to be a career woman, because then people think you're neglecting your family. You're not allowed to be a homemaker, or a single mom, because people think you're a strain on society. If you have trouble being a mother, everyone thinks you're abusive or neglectful. We're not allowed to be feminine or tomboyish because the former is vilified and the other is exploited, and both are played against each other.

You're always blamed if your marriages or families falls apart. No one listens to you when you are hurting. Instead, they blame you for your own misery. Sometimes they try to make you think you're the villain. You're judged for how you dress and present yourself. The system plays you and other women against each other. And even if one of us actually DOES do something bad, we're all blamed for it and it's used to make people think the patriarchy is good. So we can either accept responsibility for one bad woman, or we can defend ourselves, and be punished for it. I've even learned of some women who are so afraid of this, that they have defended bad women. Not because they care about her, but because they know it will lead to the patriarchy getting worse.

"Never be rude, never be selfish, never show off..." the more i watch this scene turns out this is not just a monologue only for women, but also for almost every single human being on earth who desperately lives up to the expectations of others. Truly heartbreaking 😭

Best part of the movie for me. Props to whoever wrote this part of the script. It was brilliant!

I don’t know why so many men and boys are denying this in the comments. This speech is very true. And men face similar problems but in different ways than women do. And this speech is talking about the way women struggle. I don’t see why people are denying it.

I feel like the people calling her "whiney" are taking this speech out of context. I don't think this speech is perfect but it doesn't have to be. She's simply expressing herself and she doesn't have to come across as "likable" or pander to anyone (the point of her speech). The rest of the movie continues to explore these themes and themes that she didn't talk about (like male gender roles). As a dude, I found a lot of this speech relatable. I'm definitely not one to judge women that find this speech relatable (especially since I've had many loved ones say that they do).

“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows, it’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit, it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. THATS HOW WINNING IS DONE! Now if you know what you’re worth go out and get what you’re worth, but you gotta be willing to take the hits and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you want to be because of him or her or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!”
- Rocky Balboa

I feel like she took the words right out of my mouth . Like it’s all so true and it’s exactly what many of us women feel and go through every day

This speech made me realize how unfair the world is to women, not because that I didn't know that already, but it just proved it to me more; slapped me more. I have 2 sisters and I love them so very much, but sometimes I wonder if my sisters ever think of how unfair the world is; of how hard they get it. I wonder if they every think that I get thing easy just because I am a man.
