FIXED: Windows 10 October Update 1809 SAFE TO DOWNLOAD NOW (Bug Explanation)

Microsoft has worked to FIX the Windows 10 1809 October update. Previously, the feature update was deleting user files, causing a bit of a panic. Sure, it only impacted 0.01% of users, but that's still a lot of people at risk of data loss. The update has been fixed and re-deployed, and Microsoft has worked to improve the Feedback Hub with goals of preventing this from ever happening again.

NOTE: my math is bad, I'm running on little sleep. It's .01% NOT .01x 400 million. Oh well, the point stands, enjoy your free angry comment bait.

This video was SUPPOSED to publish 12 hours ago when it Premiered, but instead it... didn't. I may never use that feature again now.

Minor quibble, 0.01% = 0.0001 so 0.0001 x 400, 000, 000 is 40, 000 not 4 million :D

Now it does make sense why my files aren't deleted with this update (I never link folders in my other partition into the libraries folders)

"Why are you storing data on your C drive?"
Because it's my frelling drive and I do whathever I want with it

This update is NO JOKE. It did more than delete some of my files. I lost audio and I lost Word. ALL of my files on my computer AND OneDrive. Microsoft's tech people were doing their best, but two of their fixes didn't work. It was not until after three Windows downloads and installs, and three Word downloads and 2 installs that I got my computer back. 3 days of work lost. And after reinstalling Word, ALL of my files were missing. Not only on my computer, but also my CLOUD backup. The only thing that prevented this from being a disaster of life threatening proportions, (I'm a writer) is that I had a backup on an external hard drive.

Thanks for explaining the bug in-depth for me, first time I've watched one of your videos and it's been very informative. Enjoy this nice, civil comment non-bait and sorry you have to put up with toxic YouTube comments. Mental health is still health; take care.

In Windows 10 October Update 1809 there are dangerous change for people who like cleaning their drive using Windows tools "Cleanup". Windows include "Downloads" folder to Cleanup in My case I loss 90 GB worth of data

I don't redirect the folders, I just don't use them. I have a separate folder outside Windows for my data.

that bug explanation is so great. I COULDVE been hit by this pretty bad, but never stored a single important file directly on my SSD, so that explains why I wasnt affected.

I got the Win10 October update in early February 2019. It just happened; no agreement from me. I have not been able to use my computer since. It would not turn on. My technician called Microsoft, who wanted a lot of information about my computer (which was on the computer; they even explained in detail how to access the info they wanted - didn't seem to realise that that was the problem; the computer would not turn on!) Eventually, MS advised that I'd have to buy WIN10 OS again and reinstall it. $370! Why should I? But I did. Now it's April. Still no luck. Am sorely tempted to go MAC in future. Now you've got me worried about what files I may have lost. I wish I'd seen your earlier vids before now. Keep up the good work, man.

Just a quick FYI, my PC just updated to 1809 last night and now my c:/users/myuser is gone! Also, windows won't boot. Fricken update isn't fixed.

I got an 1803 update last night. No show so far of 1809. In the past 'backing up' (with compression) would stop working from one version of Windows to the next. Also, 3rd party back-up programs I used were specific to the version of Windows they were written for. This means that hard drives maintained for my radio club and previously my Morris dance club needed (uncompressed) copies to remain readable over the years. Copying manually to three external disks allows me to know where everything went. Yes, this does mean extra work each time I create new material.

Well...Here's my take as an IT Professional for 45 years. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS backup your data before doing ANY kind of upgrade. Some questions here on why do people keep their files on C:? If you have a laptop (like me) that can't support multiple drives (my prior HP did), then you have no option. My laptop (HP Spectre x360) came with an nVME 500GB SSD. Since I knew that I would quickly exceed that capacity, I opted for the 2TB Samsung 970 nVME. Chances are I won't be filling that anytime soon. I re-purposed my 500GB in a USB 3.1 gen2 enclosure and now have the benefit of a 500GB external drives at 10Mbps speed. Nice video BTW!

So...exactly what happens. Do they roll-back Update 1809 and make a new update that doesn't erase the Documents folder if there's stuff in it or did they just patch it (a bandage solution that doesn't help matters)? Because patching it without deep-sixing the update that caused the problem in the first place is not going to be an adequate solution because frankly, there'll probably be others running into the same problem. I completely disabled my auto-update to prevent the computer from trying to update Windows 10 because I didn't want my computer automatically updating and blowing up my files.

Thanks. I'm building a new gaming PC in a couple days, and will be installing Windows 10 on it (not because I want Windows 10; but the games I want to play require it, so...).
I've been a bit concerned about this update; and you've set my mind to ease.
Once again, I'm looking forward to my new build with great anticipation, and great expectation of many happy hours of gaming to come.

My system updated a few hours ago, since the update, none of my games work now! Including steam games! I've tried everything and nothing is working! Has anyone else got this problem? :(

What's been a big hassle with updates to Windows 10, and upgrades from 7 and 8, is Windows Update. Upgrading from 7 and 8 you have to manually kill the Windows Update process or the install of 10 may fail. That also could happen with earlier build updates to 10. For 1809 I used the media creation tool to download the ISO, which I burned to a DVD, then installed from that.
That went smoothly. Apparently Microsoft has finally figured out how to work with their own system. Does it kill the Windows Update process or have they found some way to make Windows Update not interfere?
