In the UK we had a programme called The Old Grey Whistle Test. In the days of songwriters working in offices they'd play the song to the doormen and cleaners, if after a couple of listens the 'old grey' (a colloquial term for the manual workers) could whistle it then the song had passed the old grey whistle test and was a likely hit.

You know, this makes me think of two recordings I did a year or two ago…

One contained a riff I really like, I worked on the song for a long time, and it was (and still is) super fun to play alone on guitar. Then when I sat down to record it and added drums and bass and a second guitar, it was dead and lifeless.

And then there was this other thing… two chords… my girlfriend was out for the night, I had a drink and was making noise on guitar and having a boat load of fun. The guitar part wasn’t even particularly interesting… but that evening after I added the drums and bass and then finally the second guitar, it completely came to life… I never play it when I pick up my guitar, but I listen to the recording on my phone.

Music is weird.

I just released a song called 1969. Great year. Good song? I hear crickets from other people. I love the song. It's one of my all time favorite songs. Write music YOU love and you will never be disappointed

Record it then lock it away and don't listed for at least a month, work on other things and do the same with them. Come back and listen to them all when you have at least 8. You'll know which are the good ones!

Write what you like and love, be open to others opinions & criticism, and even if it does not appeal to the mainstream, there are always poeple how like what you like!
Or if you just want to be commercially viable stick to the same 4 chord progressions and patterns that most of pop(ular) songs use and you're good to go... just maybe a bit more boring and unfullfilled...

No one will tell you before you're dead. Ask Schubert.

Play music because you enjoy playing music.
Write music because you enjoy writing music.

Otherwise, what even is the point? Go be a stockbroker or something. lols

Ask your drummer. If they like it it’s good.

I HATE the use of the word "hook" . It is almost like you are out to catch some unsuspecting listener. So predatory. Listen to most of Kris Kristofferson's music. There is a story. There is emotion. There is meaning. There is something everyone can relate to. No hook. No bait. Just something you can indulge in and get lost in.

If it sounds like anything mainstream of the last 20 years, the answer is no. If it's overly impressive in speed and virtuosity the answer is no. If the rhythm section doesn't carry the song the answer is no. Probably more, but that's off the top of my head.

Ultimately, while I get what you are going for here, I think the argument that art - including music - is subjective is a bad argument.
