Ah, old times...
Developed and produced here in Almelo, the Netherlands. At the time the CombiScope series was developed we were Philips; later our plant was sold to Fluke.
The main processor was a Intel 80c196kb microcontroller that contained bootcode written by me ;-)
Yes, these Philips OQ chips were developed here.

The Philips tubes were just stunning. I like the way they bonded an actual, perfectly flat glass plate with the graticule to the front of the cone and inserted the gun deflection assembly built in regular glass tube in to it. The only part that was moulded was the cone, and they used frit glass to solder the 3 parts together. And no, I never saw one go to air. Exceptional tubes, the spinout from Philips continued to make them for quite a long time, AFAIK, the last CRT manufacturer to close in Europe.

2:00 in case you're wondering what the "flying saucer" on the front page of that manual is: it's the "Evoluon" in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, the home town of Philips (and me). Built in 1966 for Philips and was used as science museum until 1984. It still exists but is in use for other purposes now.

That scope was super clean inside - and so many things done top-notch, that it's surprising there were some oversights like the poor mounting clip design and lack of test points. But still - what a steal!

I have one too, and I think I bought it for around 75 USD. Same condition but working. Use it regularly and have been for three or four years now. I have several other scopes, both modern and much faster analog and digital, but still use this one as I like it a lot.

Nice score and look forward to the repair video.

I bought one of these combiscopes in 4 channel. It shut off after a while as well. Turns out the fan was going out and it would overheat. One replacement fan later, and no more issues.

I thought mine had more knobs than relying on buttons, but it was several years ago, and I don’t have that scope any longer.

Being from The Netherlands, this brings back so many memories! Those 1990s Philips batteries powered my toys. Later when I went to my first summer job, I used these Combiscopes a lot. Later still and I met some people from Almelo where these were built. Cool to see this stuff back!

Last year I picked up one of those for 70 euro including a function generator, a set of probes/cables and even a cool fluke carrying bag for the scope. It works perfectly and I use it a lot for uni and projects, best deal of my life.

Wow, what a score! I'd love to see a testing and repair video on this piece of kit. My first suspicion is a failed cap or solder joint in the power supply. The caps look good, but that doesn't really mean a whole lot.

Those 32k 2k/8k option resistors at 15:50 look quite interesting :) I wonder if this puppy can be upgraded with bigger memory chips (as it would seem that there are pins on the memory IC footprints for larger packages)

Got the exact same model since the beginning of the year. My first oscilloscope, and even though I kind of wish it had knobs and Vernier, it's still pretty freaking cool!
I love that I can just switch between digital and analog mode.

The PS could be going into protection mode due to some other cause. I remember when Phillips announced their 7 ICs to make a TV it was a milestone. Their Compact Cassette wasn't bad either.

I scored two scopes at a surplus place. One was a Tektronics 2445A for $50 and the other is a Tektronics 2465B for $60. Both would not turn on which suggests power supply problem. I was able to locate a refurb power supply for the 2465B from Greece for $265 and it has been a great scope since. I was not able to locate a power supply or service manual for the 2445A, so I never bothered to do anything with it since the 2465B is the better model. Great score!

My bet is the voltage tripler is likely breaking down, because it used RIFA capacitors inside. Also note all the blue SMD resistors are also Phillips manufacture.

I have had a PM3394 for 26 years now and use it as my daily scope because of its great flexibility and better user interface compared to many more modern scopes. I mostly use it in analog and only occasionally switch to digital mode for those more difficult measurements.

Still works great after all this time and it still has the original Philips (made in Belgium not Poland) batteries which still read more than 1.5V.

My friend had an LG TV that would power cycle every minute. I took out the power supply board, nothing obviously wrong so I heated every solder joint on the primary side and now it works perfectly, a rare triumph! This strategy might work with your power board too.

Noticed a bulging electrolytic at roughly the 3 o'clock position at 12:39. Might want to check that out.

One of the Philips promotions made note of them having screwless assembly, in reality they all had three screws, top case, bottom case, and IEC cable retention.

The autoset button from these original mid 80’s era scopes is always useful. I still have a PM3055 with a semi destroyed front panel 😃

12:49 Is there something going on with that cap on the right side? j1001 ch1 or is it just the angle of the camera?

Used to have a 3082 if memory serves - very similar but 100Mhz and no memory. It was amazing. Bought it from UK Army auction for €150, sold it 15 years later for £150 😂
Absolutely amazing. Open it up and admire the absolute absence of trimmers. All is done via service menu.
