I just went back to record crates after using IKEA shelves for years because I’m getting older and finding it harder and harder to read the thin spines of a record jacket. I’ve got some old milk crates but I’m slowly replacing them with crates I build from old barn wood that we have on our property. It takes up more space but I enjoy the “record store style” browsing.

I love crates because it gives the feeling of flipping through records at a record store!

I use wooden cantaloupe crates from the late '60s that fit records perfectly. Each one held about 150 LPs.

As always, great video. But regarding that crate thing.. I wouldn't pay ~60 bucks for that contraption.

Frank, love all of your videos. Since I am of a "certain vintage" the nostalgic references are always a plus. Back in the day in the SE USA, the thing to do was store records in Peaches records and tapes crates. I think they held 100+ records, which was perfect for a high school or college kid in the 80s. Back then, we had as many tapes as records thanks to the boom box and walkman. Now, we have Kallax.
By the way, love your bar. I had a Stroh's mirror decades ago. If I still had it, it would be on the living room wall.

Those crates look really well built! Gotta love that Queensryche EP. I found my copy a few months ago at a local record sale. The Lady Wore Black reminds me of being in junior high, riding my bike around town with my Walkman blaring.

I love reusing vintage wood crates. I have anything from what was once originally used to ship and store apples, shotgun shells, whiskey, wine, peaches, and glue. I much prefer flipping through records than bookshelving them.

Hi Frank, isn't it cool how what once were called milk crates turned into record crates. Wow beverage crates.... wow they bring memories. Yep the multi function of the wooden crates. Love the cube. Thanks for another great video taking me through memory lane.... cool. Have a great week and great long Canada Day weekend.

I’ve been using the Sterilite Crates from Wal Mart until I get a good shelving unit. I have roughly 600 LPs. They work perfectly. Hold roughly 50 records apiece depending on sleeve thickness. I also keep them stored on 2 three rack bakers type shelves for now to keep them off the ground. Plus when I moved into my new home recently it made moving the record collection a lot easier. Keep up the great videos Frank! I’ve learned a lot from you!

I have a few wood boxes I bought at Target but they aren't for records but work out great and look good. I also have a couple actual record crates made of wood, I think Crosley made them. However I really like the crates you just showed. With them having a lid that can close and being stackable they would be a great solution and a space saver. Thanks for sharing Frank.

I had an entire wall unit of red milk crates in college, and I wish I still had them. I definitely need to invest in some storage-the pepsi boxes match my aesthetic, but I really like the looks of the ubecube. Will have to try those out!

One of the photos of milk crates you showed was from Jilbert Dairy in my hometown of Marquette, Michigan. I got a kick out of that.

Great video Frank. That ube cube does look like a quality product.

I have used a few different methods over the years to store records. Jacking a milk crate was always a go to start. Usually I just took one from work. I did buy one from Office Max that I now use for my old copies of Vintage Guitar Magazine. I have the old Expedite shelves from Ikea and I will say overall it looks better but I do miss flipping through my records. I do have a 1960s local soda company's wood box I picked up at an antique store for some of my 45s. I can get two rows side by side with the 45s.

I live in Arizona so I bought a self assembled wood crate from Stinkweeds here and that will hold my 10 inch records as well as my 12 inch singles. I also bought from Zia Records a few of their 45 boxes with their logo stamped into the front. They are great but the thing weighs a ton when you go to pick it up. Those have built in handles. My 12 inch records live in my Expedite shelves.

I usually recommend trying different solutions to see what works well for you. A milk crate would look tacky in a upscale living room. Its ideal if you want your records out of site if you have a fairly small collection. The ube cube would be a better solution. Also your record storage will vary depending on how many records you have and also how prominent you want your collection to be. There really isn't a right or wrong, its just going to depend on your tastes. Also mixing the styles up gives a but of an eclectic mishmash of style. Also the storage will vary depending on what your living situation is.

Not a fan of the plastic, but man those vintage wooden pop crates you have are the deal. My collector mentality would want to have every single different one out there and the best part is they are practical as well as pulchritudinous. Your pad just keeps on surprising me with its inherent coolness, Frank.

7:40 - A copy of ELO's _Out Of The Blue_ would look perfect through the window.

I like the look of these for sure. Right now I’ve got a mixture of storage - shelves in my office closet, a small standing 2-shelf unit for overflow, and 4 pull-out style shelves in the music room built in. If you can manage it, pull out shelves are fantastic and let you flip through the records.

I have wooden crates and plastic crates thru the house. They work very good as you can move them easily when cleaning.

I went the wooden crate route. I found some nice sturdy wooden crates at Marshalls and HomeGoods that hold about 70 records each. Back in the '80s I got the Napa Valley wooden crates (held about 150 albums) that they sold in record stores, but I got rid of those a few years ago.

There is Nothing better then antique wood crates and boxes for vintage albums.
Been at this since '77.
Twelve wood crates, eleven for 575 albums, one for MAD magazines ( Sept.'73 - Oct. '80 )
