7:45 -- "I'm willing to suffer the consequences of my error ... that's not the same thing as being right." Brilliant.

A linguist by specialty wants to change the English language and recognize these inappropriate pronouns to appease the student body? NO!

I will never refer to someone as "they". Because its ridiculous, no matter how deeply they feel they should be referred to that way. Its over peiveleged children wanting to be treated as extra special. Thats all it is.

Using third plural to a single person only supports their state of pychosis making it a shared one.

Disappointing to hear McWhorter behave somewhat disingenuously, pretending that "you’re smarter than me" when I doubt he believes that at all. There is a bit of spinelessness in saying I will just go along with behavior to avoid confrontation and pretend that you’ve taken some sort of moral high ground. Language does not evolve through bullying, especially if the government acts as the "muscle".

He’s essentially asking two questions: how do I tell when someone lying to me? And how do I tell when someone lying to themselves?

My hero! And, whomever asked the question: listen to yourself! Listen to how long it took you to ask the simplest of questions. And we get you’re a linguist!

The truth is that people do not get to pick their own pronouns. They are whatever their biology says they are. Otherwise pronouns have no meaning and convey no information so we might as well all just grunt at each other.

It is just a bully move and one that appeals to children and adults who think like children. Some people will not be bullied like that, nor will they let the children run everything.

As a linguist and a semiotician, listening to another linguist ignoring (and even deleting) the basic definition of the principles of verbal communication and syntactic rules in communication is just SHOCKING.

There is a question of freedom of speech. If Dr. Peterson was asked individually by a student to be referred a certain way independent of a law, he has no issue with the idea. However when a law defines how anyone should address another person, freedom of speech or choice of speech is starting down a slippery slope where freedoms are being eroded by regulations and laws that remove freedom of choice. I love the statement ( paraphrased)” I may not agree with what you say or believe, but I will defend your right to say or believe what you choose to say or do “

Pretty sure that's John McWhorter asking the question.

This linguist loves the sound of his own linguistics

This was a very articulated discussion...the linguistic person seemed very sincere, and even expressed his skepticism...JP response was very well thought out

I love how thoughtful, articulate, and honest Peterson and McWhorter are. They’re not just asking attack questions, or giving stock answers. Both seem to be striving for truth and authenticity.

The "linguist" has an agenda; several.

YOU can call yourself whatever you want, but I REFUSE to obey you and play your games, ,never

If someone is snotty, rude or demanding - you deny them immediately. If they ask very nicely you can inquire further and judge their sincerity. I think if you’re uncertain you ask them if you can just use their name. If they have a problem with their own name than they’re ridiculous so you don’t back down.

I will never call a single person "they."

You can't call an apple an orange just to placate the green grocer.
