The trade war between the United States and China is dominating the discussions at a summit of Southeast Asian leaders in Singapore.
US President Donald Trump has decided to skip the meeting. His deputy Mike Pence is there to reiterate the Trump administration’s “commitment” to keep the Indo-Pacific region free and open amid straining relations with Asian countries over the “America-first” policy.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is also in Singapore but it’s not clear whether he will meet Pence to discuss the trade dispute.
On the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit, Pence has already met Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi and told her that the persecution of Rohingya was inexcusable.

Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay reports from Singapore.

Aung San Suu Khi is just a defacto leader of Myanmar. I don't support the atrocities against the Rohingya people but she can't do much.Only the powerful Myanmar military leaders can do something about the problem.

Thia year's ASEAN Summit marks a sharp contrast to the past. Singapore has always been a staunchly pro-US country, and yet it has been openly critical of the US in this year's summit, a first in recent memory. Kishore Mahmubani, the former Singaporean foreign minister, went so far as to link ISIS terrorism in Asia with US clandestine activities, another first in recent memory. Elsewhere in the Summit, the US delegates have been given the cold shoulder if not treated outright as pariahs. Trump's White America First and Make White America Great Again at the expense of the world are not sitting well with the nonwhite peoples of ASEAN and Asia. ASEAN has turned against the US, and irreversibly so if Washington refuses to backpedal on its racist and white supremacist foreign policies.
