QUESTION: Let's say that I am currently on macOS Monterey 12.6. If I restore an old backup that was made with macOS Monterey 12.1, will Time Machine restore the backup along with the older OS? Or will my mac remain on macOS Monterey 12.6?

Following scenario:

My old Macbook Pro with Catalina gives up the ghost and I have a complete Catalina backup on an external hard disk. After the whole thing, I buy a new computer (e.g. Mac Studio) with Ventura already pre-installed.

Now my question: *Can I restore my Laptop with a Catalina Backup on a Ventura device without any problems?*

Im experiencing difficulty actually being able to access the backup files I need. When I select Time Machine through the System Preference Menu, it shows that the last backup is the one I am needing to access. I enter Time Machine, it pulls up the timeline to the right and I still see that backup that U need. However, I cannot seem to access it. It doesnt clip through the various dates showing in timeline, and actually wont do anything but what I currently have in my files. Am I missing a step or is there another way that I need to be trying to gain entry to it? At one point I was able to find and access the files I needed, but cant seem to get there again. I only remember that I saw something about containers or group containers or something and maybe mobile documents? BUt I also think that I remember seeing individual files or maybe folders stamped as Time Machine and I was able to go into them. I cant find anything like that which contains my files anymore. When I think I find something, specifically I am searching for my photography files which are .NEF, it seems anytime I think I came across them, the files are named correctly, but the icon looks blank and it wont allow me to open it. Im very frustrated, an Apple Support Advisor was "helping me resolve a kernel failure report when all she actually did was ruin my entire computer. Her attempt to have me copy the system volume was not done properly and i ended up losing a ton of important files, things I cannot recreate and are sentimental to my family. Im also supposed to be sending in my Macbook for approved replacement (as of April 2021) but havent been able to do it yet because I cant risk sending in this machine and having them wipe it and then not getting any of my things back. Very frustrating, especially when things dont work like they should since she instructed me to essentially break my machine. So how do you get around all that?

I very much appreciate this video and it’s surprising the time machine app is so unintuitive.

I just used your directions for restoring my files from TIME MACHINE and while it did restore the folders that I needed, it did NOT include any of the contents? What am I doing wrong? Help?

No longer works with new OS that just came out. "Enter Time Machine backup" is not an option on my computer since the update.

I have a question. I backed up my SSD using time machine. I clicked encryption for that back up. I used recovery to put that back up back onto the SSD a week later.
However, after the back up had loaded on to the computer, I tried logging in with my password. I had a forever spinning circle. I never had this issue with non-encrypted back-ups. I assume it is the encryption causing this?
Why was there no option to enter the encryption password I set?
What do I do here?
Thanks.

Hi, and I’ve just inherited a 27” 2013 iMac, 3.2 Ghz, 16/1TB (Mojave) and it works perfect . - . My normal daily workhorse is a 13” 2015 Retina MacBook Pro, 2.9 Ghz, 16/256 (Big Sur) – and it works perfect, too. The questions: which of these machines should I use as my daily desktop driver? And is it worth keeping them both?
