My ex and I were like this. We had built up a lot of resentment between us and our relationship just became one big argument. Finally, I told him, "Look, neither of us is happy, and doing this is just draining our energy and wasting our time. Let's just stop here. We don't have to do this. I think we'd both be better off." And he thought about it for a moment, and agreed. He helped me pack my stuff, and we talked about the lessons we learned and what emotional baggage we wanted to leave behind and how we'd do things differently in our future relationships. Then we hugged and said goodbye, and we both felt good about it and left on good terms. We both later got married to nice people, and we're both happy. He's got a cute kid now, too.

It's either they are scared of being alone, they don't know what a healthy relationship is, or they don't have enough self-respect to be in a healthy relationship.

Just leave them be. In my experience their not going to listen to anyone anyway and they will either learn the hard way or be in denial until the very end. Or in rare circumstances they will actually work things out and find their definition of healthy.
