Keep your lighter in your pocket close to your body. It will stay warm and work fine every time

If your matches are wet, put them into your hair for about 10 minutes. They will light just fine. My Gramma showed me this and my survival instructor didn't believe me until we tried it.

If you don’t bring multiple fire starting methods and kindling you’re taking a risk. Redundancy is underrated

You can't have too many back up plans when it comes to not freezing to death.

I wore out a 1/2 inch Ferro Rod within 3 months , it lasts a lifetime you said !

I was starting up to 75 Fires per day but 50 was about normal, I went from a Novice to a Professional in that 3 months, then I started with Flint and Steel

You actually get more lights with a bic than with a ferro rod.

Also lighter fluid freezes at -362°F. It just looses pressure, but 5 minutes under your armpit will warm it back up.

"a lighter doesn't work in the winter"

Lady I am a chronic smoker I can guarantee you that lighters 100% work in the winter

If you keep your lighter in your waterproof survival kit, it will work just fine.. I do keep a ferro rod and some petrol gelled tinder as well though for emergencies.

Plant the rod into your tinder then do a controlled strike down. Doing it this way will give you bigger sparks, directly to your tinder and you have safer control of the knife

Ive never needed a ferro rod to smoke and I’ve smoked in -40°F. Bic worked just fine.

I’ve burnt through ferro rods before. I was abusing them because I was an excited kid, but I still have worn them to the point of them breaking

I don't consider myself the survivalist. I'm fairchase extreme Hunter spent many nights with bare necessities in the wilderness. Always carried lighter and matches. Never knew Federal rod was that reliable. Thank you

I live in winter capital of Canada...lighters will absolutely work in the cold

I find it more practical to use a lighter or matches. Ferro rods require fine, dry tinder bundles to start. Which are not always available

But yah I always keep a ferro rod as a back up

Place the steel close to the bundle and drag the ferro rod towards you, instead of the steel going towards the bundle. That way you won’t move your bundle and the sparks will be closer.

A lighter can be dried out, or better yet, kept dry until you need it. Use fero rods when your primary goes down.

Most jet lighters are water resistant(storm proof are waterproof) and all are wind proof. Jet lighters also burn much hotter so fires start a lot quicker. You can carry butane around with you.
