Here's how I tap just three backyard maple trees to make enough maple syrup for my family for the year. I explain the best time to tap the trees, how many taps per tree, and two different tap systems to use.

Watch Part 2 to see how to boil the sap down into syrup.

Here's an inexpensive kit to get started at home:

Or this kit is similar to what I use:

In the olden days, taps were all that were available. Today, I think that spiles are the way to go. I use vodka bottles that hang off of the spile. I drill a 3/8" hole in the cap, which allows the cap to snap onto the "hose end" and not pop back off from the weight of a full bottle. When full, I unscrew the bottle and add a fresh one, taking the new cap and putting it on the full bottle, which goes into the freezer until I have enough to boil down. You can do this with soda bottles as well. I just happened to have a bunch of vodka bottles, LOL. 😇

Dip sponges in orange oil..let dry. Insert on bag ends...natural bug deterrent and food safe. Get a tote..and use a 1/4 INCH poly to move sap with gravity or vacume. Dark stays warm to flow using solar heat.

Is there anything that needs to be done after pulling out the taps after you've gotten all of the sap you need? it seems like the sap would just keep leaking all over.
