want to taste something fun and delicious?  boil your maple syrup a bit more, pour some on clean snow making a long narrow trail.  the syrup will harden a bit.  take a craft stick (tongue depressor) and roll up the harden syrup around it.  WOW!  a maple lollipop.  absolutely delicious!  I'm Canadian and that is one of my best childhood memories.

The HD in this video is substantially better than you older ones. GardenFork videos are some of my favorites to watch on YouTube. Much better than broadcast tv, these folks are real and they care.

Regards from Seattle Eric and Lynn.

Hi, I am a Canadian living in Cape Town South Africa and I have 2 young daughters. My 7 yr old had to provide a Canadian food for her school today so we chose pancakes with real maple syrup (brought here from home). she had no idea about maple syrup so I had her watch your video. she was soooo amazed and told her whole class about how it is made. thanks for sharing such easy steps to making it!

Trying this for the first time this year. Only tapped three trees, two taps per tree. One is definitely producing way more than the others.

Very cool. My daughter and I have tapped 4 trees this year and just boiled down our first little batch of around 4 gallons of sap. We ended up with about 2/3 of a pint of extra thick syrup. We boiled ours down a bit longer to get it super rich. We're having a ball.

i just keep them in the fridge, but you can pour the hot syrup into the jars with new seals and it should seal it, but i'm not the expert on that part, thanks, eric.

thanks Dameion, i've had ratios between 40-1 and 30-1, it depends on a number of things. one of the big bonuses of collecting in buckets rather than tubes and a tank is you can pull a lot of water out of the sap by letting the buckets freeze overnight, then scoop out the ice ( frozen water ) and collect the sap in the morning.

Thank you for your video. i live in Northern Middle Tennessee. i am going to tap my trees Jan16. This is the first time i've done this here. About 40 years ago I tapped trees in the middle(lower penninsula )of Michigan. We did it there the end of February. The temps are different ere so this should be a good time. Very excited to see how it works. :)

Thanks for the refresher, I'm getting ready to boil down about 50 gallons, really looking forward to it and your video taught me a couple things I didn't think of like the candy thermometer and doing most of it outside and finishing it off inside.

great to hear you are tapping sugar maple trees. there is a fine line as to when the syrup is done, err on the side of less thick or lower temp, you can always re-heat it again on the stove top. 30 maple tree taps will keep you busy, i plan on tapping more of our sugar maples this year, bought some food grade plastic barrels for collection.

this is a great article, search for: Connecticut Wildlife, January/February 2012 "Make Your Own Maple Syrup"

that's how i learned how to do it. eric.
