SpaceX's forgotten design "Dragon XL" could change NASA's Lunar mission
=======
NASA and SpaceX are a match made in heaven.
The two have long been important to each other, but the symbiotic relationship appears to be growing, and increasingly on display.
NASA Administration Bill Nelson emphasized that “NASA is really committed” to commercial partnerships, pointing out that SpaceX won a crucial role in the agency’s Artemis plan to use Starship to deliver astronauts to the surface of the moon.
But actually, before Starship, another design SpaceX could change NASA's Lunar mission.
Unfortunately, it is being forgotten!
If you're a loyal fan of SpaceX, you've probably already guessed the spacecraft we're talking about.
Yes, it is a new variant of the Dragon - named: The Dragon XL, an expendable spacecraft that could supply NASA astronauts around the Moon and Earth.
But what does it look like?
How powerful is it?
Why do we rarely hear SpaceX talk about this name?
All this and more in today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
SpaceX's forgotten design "Dragon XL" could change NASA's Lunar mission
----
To be resolved, thank you.

Kevin thank you for your work making, editing and posting these videos. Your channel is getting better and better!

I wonder if you have any information on the lunar capable spacesuits that NASA requires for the moon missions; I remember when NASA was worried that development of the suits could delay the missions by years. At one point Elon said that SpaceX could develop the suits if necessary; are there any such plans? The suit problem is becoming more critical as human landing missions approach and I would appreciate it if you can investigate and report on the status of the lunar spacesuit problem. Thanks!

I wonder how long it will be until SpaceX has a starship that is capable of refuelling in orbit, flying to the moon, landing on the moon staying there for however long it takes. Taking off from the moon and coming back to earth without the need for even touching the gateway.
In every which Way the gateway is an old space idea.

Another good one, and not a trace of click bait in sight! 👍

I think Elon should have waited to develop starship and focused on falcon heavy and the development of space exploration like this. and the docking/fueling in LEO could be tested on a smaller scale. 2 falcon heavies = 1 saturn 5 so launch 2-3 segments for one module that can get you to and from the moon. And can be scaled up technically if you look at starship refueling concept in LEO

or develop a reusable transport ship meant to ferry from LEO to the surface of the moon and the falon and/or heavy can shuttle at least 7 people from earth to the transport in LEO

It's time to accept that Starship is in the early phases of development, and may be years away from operational status.

How big is the Dragon XL? Were official sizes given?

Dragon XL on NASA's Lunar mission and beyond... I would love to get your take on the use of the Tesla Bots on these early missions. Elon is going to have these Bots doing meaningful work in the factories in the near future... with the AI work already showing results with the prototypes, it shows what might be possible on a mission. Don't need the human support system for the Bots, but they could be testing it plus all kinds of things given their humanoid form factor. They could do experiments, perhaps even 'fix' something with the 'Earthling Engineers' (lol) guiding them... like one of those 'Houston, We have a problem.' moments. And they'd be on the moon for use on the surface... opens up all kinds of possibilities. Would love an episode (or several) dedicated to this topic. The dialogue with your audience would be something to see. Have several ideas I'm saving for that time. SoCalFreddy Thanks for considering this.

Non-cryohenicpropellant for the Lunar Gateway?
Starship is mainly cryogenic, no problem accelerating toward Mars, slowing down 6 months later with unevaporated cryogenic fluids could be a concern?

Hi great space x thanks for sharing this information with me this seems to be the right way to go we’ll see how it goes David 🇺🇸🚀❤️🇬🇧👍

Just use a starship upper stage for this?

Why not use several modified sections of a star ship assembling it in orbit around the moon as a gate way vehicle?

Egg shaped orbits are not possible (since eggs are not symetric). Orbits are always elypses.

Since SpaceX has a habit of forcing NASA to accept a downscaled product from the original agreement (Dragon capacity / landing mode) or accept changes to long held mission rules (man-rating of the Falcon 9), I think they are just hedging their bets.

Happy to know that despite Besos litigation efforts, NASA made a bet on Space X . Elon Musk is a national treasure who should be supported as its done so far.

I have to believe that Elon is taking and fulfilling NASA contracts, whilst developing his own, SpaceX models for lunar missions, independent of NASA and anyone else. FAA, NASA and US Govt have made it clear they intend to control SpaceX for their own reasons, and purposes, and he will not put up with this forever. He has his own plans for Mars, and lunar missions are the baby steps for Solar exploration, and I think Elon plans to see as much as he can within his lifetime, without limits set by US govt and it’s pet agencies. I hope he is as smart as we all think….
