I used to make SCUBA rebreathers. I made hazmat rebreathers for the Coral Gables SWAT team after 911. I tried to apply as a supplier to SpaceX to build an emergency rebreather that would fit inside a sealed pressure suit so an emergency de-orbit could be done with any suit in any capsule. (because the suits worn in Soyuz do not work with Dragon life support) I got the automated response about send in tax info about your company. There is no place to send suggestions. You can apply for a job, but only the jobs available. There is no place to suggest anything or talk to anyone. Nobody cares.

I also had a better design for space suit gloves where the bladder part is molded to your hand inside of a spandex glove as part of donning the suit. There was actually a NASA-funded contest to design a better glove. I tried to enter, but it was only open to universities, government agencies and nonprofits. Nobody cares.

In America, you are either a "connected" insider, or nobody cares.

The Space-Suite-Compatibility issue should be as important as the „docking adapter“-compatibility! I wonder why this has never been brought up! You are raising a very important topic here! I hope that it does not need another „Columbia“ moment until somebody wakes up and sets some common standards here!

Considering the comfort the cosmonauts enjoy on a Soyuz I don't think they would mind a little too tight or too loose suit as long as they get back to earth.

In the future (hopefully not distant) Sierra needs to be added to the mix.

You do realize that cargo dragon returns without the input of a person on board.

I'm sure returning alive in a crew dragon is probably better than not coming back or burning up on re-entry in a soyuz.

Since the Dragon was originally designed to carry 7, I would imagine that it might be a good idea to have 2 "Portable chairs" for the Dragon stowed on the ISS that can be set up to add a couple of seats for just this sort of situation. Adapters could be developed that can allow other suits to be used to supply air and possibly comms.
I think that this situation will bring forth solutions to deal with similar events in the future.

The powers that be need to solve this quickly. Those astronauts and cosmonauts are in great danger as every minute passes.

These problems remind me of the old NASA problem with Apollo 13. The carbon dioxide scrubber should have been an easy matter to replace but the fittings did not match! One would have thought that sort of problem should have been a priority for just this sort of compatibility issue and to have already been thought of. Good job, 92K cool!

A Russian admiral said "The best is the enemy of good enough." Things do not have to be perfect for an emergency escape. Any chance is better than no chance. I would rather risk an escape in Dragon without a chair or space suit than a damaged Soyuz. I might have broken bones, but I would probably survive.

During Skylab 3, Skylab 4 and ASTP a Rescue rocket was standing by ( with a 5 seat Apollo ).

Excellent episode! A lot of things I didn't know about this situation

I don't think it should be too difficult to make a set of oversize Spacex suits that would fit anyone. It wouldn't be a comfortable fit for sure but more than good enough for use in an emergency. They would just need to put the required number of suits into the Dragon and send it up unmanned.

would appear, from an outsiders point of view, that designing a "minimum basic interface specification" for suits - ship interfacing would be *exactly* something NASA should be specifying and requiring for their flights (which in effect means they get that for other flights for a single design) - maybe not full functionality, but a basic life support, comms etc interface designed specifically for rescue but expanded for basic operations.

if only "flight crew" then need something customised the "self loading payload" get something a bit more generic?

This is perhaps 1 of the most sensible and important videos Angry has raised.
Very valid piunts.

I Imagine the crew could reenter while leaving the cabin air up and running and not have suits, as there has never been a decompression with the Dragon capsule during reentry; not ideal, but what is? That would still leave the problem of not fitting in the seats snugly enough to handle the Gs as well, but gel memory foam could likely handle that. Just coming back bruised would sill be better than death.

The Crew Dragon is capable of carrying 7, but so far SpaceX hasn't done more than 4, because:
1. It allowed for longer missions with the same life support resources, and
2. They didn't need to.

Neither of those apply to a rescue mission, so they could use the full capability of that spacecraft. As far as fitting the spacesuits are concerned, a precise fit isn't required for a rescue.

If push came to shove, the space suits are not actually required to travel in Crew Dragon, they are just precautionary.
