Make aquarium water testing easy with Checker Colorimeters from Hanna Instruments. Powered by a single AAA battery, the Hanna Calcium Checker will display Calcium readings with the single push of a button. The Hanna Calcium Checker measures in ppm.

Calcium in a reef aquarium should be between 380-450 ppm. Strive to keep levels stable. Testing weekly and recording the results in a tank journal or log should help! For more aquarium product news and reviews, subscribe to our YouTube channel.

@Dan98943 You're right, they are both about the same amount of work. The fundamental difference between testing liquids with a Hanna Checker vs. a regular aquarium test kit is that a Checker provides you with a numerical reading (Calcium = 390 ppm) whereas most aquarium test results have to be compared to a color chart (leaving hobbyists to guesstimate what their levels are at).

@pyrothefirst A 600 reading means there are dissolved solids or calcium in the water. Reset unit by removing battery. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before placing the battery back and doing a test. When using sample water, it is .1ml of solution so only 2-3 drops of tank water is placed in the vile. All bubbles must dissipate before placing the curvette back into the checker. This is important because if you have bubbles in the curvette after adding powder reagent, the reading will be off.

PART 1: The Hanna Checker series measures light as it passes through the sample. It will compare the amount of light passed through the sample before and after a testing reagent is dissolved to determine the concentration of calcium. With this method, the tests are easy and very accurate, with little room for human error when performed properly. The downside is reagents can become costly when testing frequently.

Nice and Real HAndy instrument .. Video illustrates the use in a great easy way .. the only thing to keep in mind is to keep the Cuvette free of finger prints and wipe the cuvette with a soft wipe before inserting it into the instrument.. happy checking ..

PART 2: Titration methods rely on a chemical reaction of the unknown substance (Calcium) with the known concentration found in chemical test kit reagents (titrant). By knowing the amount of titrant used we can determine the level of calcium. This method still provides an accurate indication of the calcium concentration in your water but results can vary depending on the consistency of the testing methods and reagents used. Typically, liquid titration are a more economical option.

@VitalApparatuz We welcome your comments. The reason we pulled the original video was because our 1-800 number was listed incorrectly on a graphic in the video. We flip-flopped on whether to pull it, since we'd already placed links on Twitter, Facebook, etc. and had some views. A higher authority (aka our boss) asked us to pull the video, fix the # and re-upload. We appreciate your subscription and apologize for appearing suspect. Feel free to re-post whatever feedback you have.

Very misleading....not sure which way is correct. Do you use the unsalted ro di water to fill it up to 10 ml or do you use the sample from the tank and added another .1 sample again from the tank?

How is this easier then just using a test kit? The test kit I have uses just two bottles and I need to add some drops to the test tube. Seems about the same amount of work.

I always thought the reason for the comments section was for users to be able to provide feedback on the videos (or products featured therin).Deleting and reposting the video(thereby removing all comments) is a little dishonest...

I know this might sound stupid but with the green syringe can you go into detail? Is the does more so on the bottom or top.

thanks :)

how do you guys dilute the sample i keep getting 600 and the instructions say to dilute i tested this and got different readings for the different amounts of dilution i would empty half fill with di water and get a better reading then i would empty 3/4 and do the same and get another reading

Hanna test kits are a pain in the arse. The instructions for calcium are so bad. Then each test is either hold or press the bottom last phase so when you're doing multiple tests I can never remember which os hold or just press. Terrible design for ease of use from hanna.
