Spirit (Matt Damon) is able to connect with a human for the first time ever after meeting Little Creek (Daniel Studi). This is the story of him bonding with Little Creek's Native American family and friends.

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002) follows the adventures of a wild and rambunctious mustang stallion as he journeys through the untamed American frontier. Encountering man for the first time, Spirit defies being broken, even as he develops a remarkable friendship with a young Lakota brave. The courageous young stallion also finds love with a beautiful paint mare named Rain on his way to becoming one of the greatest unsung heroes of the Old West.

Little Creek's beauty and kindness are exactly what Spirit and Rain needed.

This movie has so much deepness, from the native Americans being accepting and knowing best for the animal, to spirit being ornery/untrusting at first and becoming obedient, he stood up for others, wanted to be apart of things that reminded him of family (which helped him become more obedient)
He has trauma from being ridden, so of course spirit accepting little creek was always a huge moment / from the sound to the facial expressions.
The fact they never talk- very expressive, FREE! This movie is something so so special-
The fact he was closed minded before, then learned about rain and her life, all so brilliant. Forever first favourite movie fr

This is one of the greatest animated westerns. The Native Americans are not stereotyped like in early animated movies like Peter Pan. Love Spirit cheers up the little girl.

They were very smart to add eyebrows to the horses. It gives them a lot of character

I ain’t Lakota but I am Menominee, but this still gives a lot of good vibes with natives. Just the Lakota and the tipi’s sitting by the river is one of the most relaxing things for me :)

It’s neat how they keep the horses making the sound they make and we hear the mind of spirit

There are just too many reasons why this movie makes me cry. More than childhood memories, you know.

This was the very first horse movie I ever saw. After that, became a horse nut! Still love this movie! I’ve seen it so many times, I can watch with my eyes closed!

Idk why that part with the little girl falling and crying used to always get me. Even more sad knowing later on in the movie their tribe is attacked 🙁

I always cried when spirit met the little girl. Just hearing her say “Bye bye horsie” made me blubber like a baby.

I like how they made the little one speak English, it can have two meanings. Colonization is happening or that the director knew there wasn’t baby words in the Lakota language. To say horse it’s a mouth full, it’s shungwatogla or something like that (people spell it a million different ways) children around that age didn’t need to know big words, they just needed to know the basics like dad (ate) or mom (ina) then later on when they were like 6 they would use those big words

When I was a kid I thought Spirit made the wrong choice the Native Americans clearly respected him and the rest of the horses ...

Slow paced part of the movie. but also really enjoyable, if you think about the significance of this whole section of the movie. Aside from the obvious were spirit grows to love rain, Little Creak and the tiny toddler also teaches spirit not all humans are bad, and some will even respect his wishes of wanting to be free. And him spending time with the natives also sort of taught him the concept of patience more so.

The closest thing the newer properties involving the Spirit franchise has come to inclusion of Native Americans, would be the occasional hinting, or at least rare evidence that Free natives are still around during timeline of spirit riding free.

And I suppose you could argue the main character herself, considering I think she’s white/Mexican. Which depending on who you ask does count as Native American inclusion. Also we do have some inclusion of Mexican culture periodically. But as I say, depending on who you ask her character is hit or miss as it relates to whether or not she’s acceptable as Native representation.
