Or....after owning various VW's over a period of years, you just reach into the can labeled 'random VW bolts' and pull out a plausible replacement. : D

Great tips. It's too easy to misremember where that one different bolt goes. Another good tip is to take photos as you go.

I have everything at my disposal to stay organized… But the lift arm sees all the hardware 😅

4 bins;

M8x1.25
M10x1.25
M12x1.25
M6x1.0 and everything else.

Print out exploded diagram of parts from part catalog. Write bolt diameter, length on printout while using mouse to hover over item on computer (this saves time rather than trying to hunt through list of parts associated through parts diagram)

Match up using ruler.

Check off printout as you refasten bolts.

All this really depends on type and complexity of project, how many fasteners and parts will you have removed from the project, and how much space you have to organize. I'm very particular with making sure every bolt, nut, clip, and screw go back where they came from, so I employ a few of these good ideas in some fashion or another. But also once you've done it for a long time, you just remember how it came apart and can put it back together regardless. Puzzle piecing a box of bolts and parts that someone else did (customers) is a great learning experience on being able to put something back together the way it came apart without missing anything. It's a great lesson in using witness marks and how to read where something came from.

This system for keeping organized saved my bacon on my first big wrench turning project. Removing the rear end out of my F-350 diesel to rebuild the rear differential. Excellent to share this as I’m pretty confident not many think of doing this.

Zip Lock bags and a Sharpie that's the way I have done it for thirty years never had a lost bolt, and never had an extra bolt! It's my favorite way to stay organized on an Industrial Engine Overhaul!!

My dad taught me these tips, they are great to know. Nothing more frustrating than trying to figure out where a bolt goes (or losing it)!

Nah, I'm definitely gonna remember where everything goes this time.

I used the black plastic takeout trays with the clear lids, and china-markers to write on them. Because I always had more than one car apart, but only had one lift to work in.

Half the battle working on cars is trying to remember how things came apart & which bolts/nuts went where . Great advice here 👍

After years of owning various Vw’s. Every teacher I had told me the importance of organization. I still use baggies and put the bolts back where they came from. It haven’t fail after all these years.

I just throw everything in a magnetic tray, occasionally pulling out a new tray as the job progresses. Going back in I work in reverse order with the trays, usually there’s only 2 or 3 bolt varieties in each so it’s not too hard to figure out what goes with what. 5 of a kind bolts go in a 5 hole component, 2 of a kind long bolts goes in the 2 of a kind thick holes, etc.

I did the ziplock bag one when I replaced the clutch on my '03 TDI last December. Worked great.

Hardest part of the whole job was getting the transmission back in. Woof.

I built 3 cars without using this method but it's a good start for apprentice

my favorite method for staying organized is what we do at our shop: tackle boxes with different sized cups! we write on tape and stick it to the lid of the tackle box with corresponding locTions. one sealed tackle box can keep 30+ different bolts together. and of course when hardware is large, we use deeper tackle boxes.

Been using all three methods for years. Now can you show us where all the 10mm and 12mm sockets end up would help out a lot.
