IT soft skills can be a career unto themselves, or they can be a supplement for an existing career.

Generally speaking, when you're lower on the ladder of a career, you'll usually draw on hard skills. For instance, you might be given a project that calls for you to hammer away at a problem with your technical know-how and IT expertise until the router routes, the switches switch, or the network is networking.

But as you advance in your career and take on greater responsibilities, it's not technical knowledge that'll ensure a 100-person office migration will get finished in two weeks. That takes skills in project management, for example.
