Our ship Mikasa was built by Vickers, I think. I used to live only 2 km from her when I was a young girl. Very well maintained.

HMS Majestic was something of a legend during Gallipoli. She came right up to the shore- her keel scraping the bottom- in order to deliver point blank fire support for the troops on the beach head. Her loss was widely mourned by the expeditionary force. She was a valiant ship and deserves to be remembered.

I like how we’re getting into pre-dreads and ironclads more.

France: Thanks Britian for motivating me to build Battleships.
UK: Oh you do not have to say that. I would not want people to think I was responsible for those.

Of course Jackie Fisher is involved, wouldn't be the Royal Navy without him.

The Royal Navy nailed their naming of ships!

So funny that both Renown(1895) and Renown(1916) were abrupt major design changes amidst a class construction

My comment: thank you for this.
My suggestion: keep doing exactly what you are doing...please.

British design philosophy: Sketch out what is needed, create blueprints, create models and build the ships.
French design philosophy: Sketch out what is needed, create blueprints, create models, tinker while building to add new technologies, tinker some more and then realise the ship is five thousand tons overweight.

Great job. It's often so easy to forget that the pre-Dreds were getting the job done while the Dreadnoughts were coming in.

So, they went pear-shaped.

I'll get my coat.

You know I was always confused until now about why battleships appeared at the end of the anno 1800 announcement trailer and now I know that they were these beauty’s

web site is very clearly the best for ship analysis for warships from about 1885 to 1945. The detail is wonderful and like the photos and diagrams too. "Drydock" is likely to be considered a classic in the future. No flattery intended, just an honest reaction to my favorite "youtube" plan on becoming a Patreon soon....

I know it’s crying over spilled milk AND beating a dead horse at this point, but it really does sadden me that none of the Majestics remain to be seen (unless you count the Mikasa, I suppose). I just love the look of them, they’re a thoroughly practical-looking yet very handsome bunch. And those peacetime paint schemes, just mwah. 👌Absolutely spiffing.

The listing of guns on these pre-dreadnoughts make my head spin. I can't imagine what it did to the poor officer in charge of stocking the magazines.

This is what I love about your channel Drach, you could’ve easily been describing the impact HMS Dreadnought had on battleship design, such was the apparent impact the Majestic‘s had on Pre-Dreadnought design, and yet I never really knew much about the class, save Mikasa was based off them, thanks as ever.

Should've mentioned that HMS Prince George sank of the coast of the Hondsbossche Zeewering in the Netherlands (look for Camperduin on the map, northwest of Alkmaar in Noord-Holland which is north of Amsterdam) on her way to the scrappers in Germany :-p.

What remained of the rest of the wreck after scrapping in place as much as could be done, was visible for decades as it became a part of the seawall. Since 2014 or so it is under the new dunes made seaward of the seawall I believe.

There is a museum, Informatiecentrum Kust, Zand tegen Zee, Strandweg 4 Petten, about the seawall on the northern end in Petten, it should have more info. Just in case anyone finds themselves nearby.

would love to see more vids about predreadnought period. I'd also love to see more on the ironclad to centre battery period and then on to the turret ships preceding the predreadnoughts
