5 Street Photography Cameras Under $400

Following some great comment conversations about cheap street photography cameras, I've compiled a list of 6 great options, 5 of which are under $400 in an effort to find the best street photography camera! A lot of photographers may aim for something like the Canon R7, the Ricoh GR, the Fujifilm X100V or X100 series - however since using my Lumix LX100 and trying out more Lumix street photography, I have found myself more tempted by micro four thirds and other compact cameras. Street photography cameras luckily tend to benefit from being more compact and easier to carry with you, so ignoring larger full frame camera bodies both saves you money while serving a better purpose.

For the M43s, don't overlook the little Panasonic 12-32, for a 24-64 range. Surprisingly sharp and relatively cheap. One of my favorites.

Olympus PEN E-PL9 user here. It's my favourite camera. Absolutely love it. I use an EM-1 MK2 as my main camera, but the E-PL9 is my most fun to use. Love it.

Just in case no one has said it already, the original Canon EOS M mirrorless camera is a hidden gem for recording beautiful video. If you overwrite the firmware with Magic Lantern (simple tutorials on youtube), it unlocks the ability to record 2.8k true RAW video in 10, 12, and even 14bit color depth. There's even a 5k anamorphic mode which is my favorite to shoot in. As far as I know, this is the only mirrorless camera that works with Magic Lantern. It's truly astounding what you can capture with this tiny cinema beast.

Canon G9 or G1x hands down best P&S with manual settings and great imagery. And I think a viewfinder is Key to street photography

For street photograpy I usually choose my Sony A5100 with it's 16-50 kit lens, or with Pentax 110 24mm & 50mm F2.8 lens. Those tiny Pentax lenses fits even the smallest pockets, however they are very good quality, and giving a little retro-style look of the photos as they have a little vignetting and softness in the corners :)

I've got the Fuji x-e2 and absolutely adore it... it has mildly better autofocus than the x-e1 but thinking of adding the x-e1 and definitely an Olympus pen. Missing that kind of kit. Thanks for the reviews!

I bought an Olympus EPL5 body for £100.00 mor discreet street photography. Shutter count about 3000 and condition is near mint. It is paired with a 17mm f1.8 which I already owned. Superb and highly recommended.

For under usd400 i think a used olympus EP5 + lumix 14mm f2.5 is the best camera for street photography.
Compact size, tilting screen + touch to shoot, on board flash, super fast auto focus, good battery life, front and back dials for good control of aperture and shutter speed, the BW grainy film effect is the best straight out of camera even compared to the fujis across IMO.

I've used the Canon EOS M with the 22mm f/2 (35mm equivalent) lens and the kit lens since 2014 and it is definitely one of my favorite cameras. If you don't mind the weight, the EOS 40d is almost free to purchase now and is very quick focusing and shooting and has a little weather sealing. 10.2mp APSC sensor size. The camera has a lot of different settings available. I use a Canon PowerShot S95 for a "pocket" camera which has a lot of different settings and will produce good photos also. The 40d has no video and the S95 has up to 720P. I don't shoot a lot of video. I picked up the S95 for $40 and it looks like new yet. It came with a case. I always carry at least two batteries per camera if I go out for a day.

Hi George.

My first ever camera was an Olympus Pen F with a 40mm f1.4 lens. Seeing a digital Olympus Pen on this reveiw made me smile at the thought.

I used to do a paper round and also washed the car at the weekends for one of my customers (a maroon Rover P5).

He had a two Nikon F2, a Hasselblad 500 and his own darkroom (his wife was a much better printer than he was). When I told him I was moving he gave me the half frame Pen FT as he never used it.

Many happy memories taking pictures with it and a great intro to photography for a fifteen year old in 1975.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

I have my grandmas old Canon EOS rebel and my grandpas old Minolta XE-1 and I have been using my Canon on every trip and “adventure” that I have gone on but I have never used my Minolta because I don’t have film but I getting film tomorrow (Kodak 200 gold) so I’m super exited to finally try film and experience both types of photography digital and film

i've been using my XT1 and the 35/f2 and I absolutely adore it, but i've been looking at something more pocketable and that olympus pen looks like it might be what im looking for

For street photography I would not go for a an EOS M because of the ergonomics. I’ve got small hands - it’s a tiny box with nothing to grip onto. That said I’ve owned 3 simultaneously because of its insane RAW video capabilities with Magic Lantern. With the latest “crop mood” firmware it is really a joy to use - shooting 5K RAW video.

I've a GX7 which I bought new several yrs ago with the 14 - 42 kit lens, a brilliant set up for street photography
I've since graduated to the GX9, an even better camera. I was tempted by the G9 but it's far too big for an mf3 sensor camera
I still use the GX7 which got slightly damaged in a fall but got repaired.
I have a number of used lenses from mpb indeed but wouldn't buy used cameras
