These carvings were made on the surfaces of rocks by Indigenous people who lived in this area long ago. Over the past five years, the team from Skinwalker Ranch has been studying these petroglyphs, trying to understand more about them.

One particular shape keeps coming up in their studies—the spiral. This shape is thought to represent a sort of gateway to other worlds, according to the traditions of the Native people. These same spirals are found in ancient stone circles on top of the mesa at Skinwalker Ranch.
