Self-control can be so hard for anyone to obtain, but I think it’s so important to teach these skills to our learners if they’re capable of it. One of my learners often displayed disruptive and aggressive behaviors whenever the phone rang/he listened to a message on the answering machine. We began to implement a program that focused on getting him to control those impulses so he was able to earn a reinforcer later for appropriate behavior. He quickly learned and mastered giving up that immediate gratification, so he could earn much more desired time on a tablet. By learning self-control, he’s able to be more independent and overall everyone is a lot happier.

I recently had this discussion with a family. The family just thought that the learner should have self-control not understanding that this skill may not be in their repertoire. I find this happens often and teaching these skills is a great way to promote independence.

"We can not say the learn should be exhibiting self-control if certain pre-requisite skills are not in their repertoire" what a strong point to end on! That is so important! I think we can all agree that one time or another we have heard someone say "well, they just need to control themselves". How can an individual do that if they do not have not the necessary skills to do so?
