We have a Giant Sequoia too, the needles make excellent free ground cover in the muddy chicken and duck run here. Great traction over the mud, the chickens and ducks love rooting through them. 👍🏻

Hey. I just saw another video, where a USA? woman cut up her pine needles & now the plants can access the nutrients & they break down faster. Might be worth trying. I've put mine on top of my woodchip paths between hugelcultur beds. 1 day, I'll put that on top of beds & refill paths with new woodchips & needles.

Great video. Thanks for the information. However, I have a question. I used pine needles for my citrus tree last year and soon after my citrus tree experienced a terrible infestation of scales pests. It almost killed my citrus tree that was healthy and gave me a huge harvest of lemons just 5 months ago. At first I was perplexed by the scale infestation, because I did not realize that the pine needle caused it. I did not make the connection and did not know where the scale had come from. But just recently it dawned on me that pine needle might have brought the scale pests. I went on line and googled it. Sure enough! I have found that scales can infest pine trees and suck on pine trees sap. So even though I love pine needles, but I hate the scales and its larvaes that come with pine needles. Do you have any suggestions that might be able to treat the pine needles before you use it as mulch so that you unintentionally bring pests infestation to trees and vegetables in your gardens? Thank you.

Can I use pine straw in my aquaponic wicking beds vs rocks, sand or clay? Water will b pumped from fish tank to fill beds then drain back into fish tank.
I have tons of free pine straw that's built up over decades. I use the top 4" layer in my hens nesting box, middle layer for mulch & the bottom decomposer layer mixed in w my dirt
I've also seen where people use pine straw to grow potatoes. I haven't don't that. I use almond, oak & dogwood leaves mixed w pine straw the chickens have mulched up

Do pine needles work better as mulch, if chopped up with a lawn mower first?

Totally confused... so I should wait years for them to break down before using it as mulch? You are showing it in your yard, not around your plants. Also if they are acidic in their needle form before they break down, is that bad for the vegetables? More questions than answers. Please clarify

I planted 15 giant sunflowers (about 8" to 10" tall) a couple of nights ago and mulched them with pine straw. 3 of them were burnt in half this afternoon and the others had brown stems where they were touching the pine straw. The straw had been on the ground for well over a 2 years
