The True Meaning Of James 2 - ''Faith Without Works Is Dead'' - Baptist Sermon Excerpt, King James

James chapter 2 is a passage which is widely misunderstood by men all over the world, when in fact it's very simple to see what it teaches once we let go of pre conceived ideas. When we try to understand the Bible, we have to understand that it's not the word of men, but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost as the Bible says. We have to compare spiritual things with spiritual, we need to compare Scripture and Scripture, and let the Bible interpret itself.

We see that over and over again in numerous verses the Bible teaches that salvation is by grace through faith alone and that it's not of works, it's got nothing to do with how we live:

(John 1:12, John 3:15, John 3:16, John 3:18, John 3:36, John 5:24,John 6:40, John 6:47, John 8:24, John 11:25-26, Romans 3:24, Romans 4:4-6, Romans 6:23,Romans 10:9-10,13, Romans 11:6, Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5, Galatians 2:16, Galatians 3:26, Acts 16:30-31, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

''But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.'' - Romans 4:5

''Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;'' Titus 3:5

In this video Pastor Steven L Anderson of Tempe Arizona preaches the true meaning of James chapter 2.

Awesome Message Pastor! My name is Steven Allen Whitehouse. I accepted Jesus Christ as my Personal Lord & Savior. Back on Sunday, August 31, 1986. I know for a fact where I'm going to spend eternity. I know that Jesus has written in that Lamb's Book Of Life. I don't have to ever worry about going to hell again today or anytime in the futrue because of what Jesus has done for me! And so I say thank-you Jesus for dieing in my place! So that I don't have to die and go to hell to pay for my sins.

Romans 4:5 is an example of someone with dead faith (faith without works). Spoiler alert: his faith is counted for righteousness.

"Faith" without works is dead. Not "Salvation" without works is dead.

Okay, let’s make this even more clear. First Paul says,

Rom 4:5

But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

To which James responds:

Jas 2:14

What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?

So, it is pretty clear that James is directly addressing the doctrine of Paul by asking the above question and that James starts out talking about real salvation, not merely being justified in the sight of men only.

Jas 2:15

If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

Jas 2:16

And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

You see, these were the kinds of works the goats of Matthew 25 did not perform, and Christ took that personally before he destroyed the goats in that chapter. Because not helping your fellow man in need is a violation of the second of the two great commandments: Love thy neighbor as thyself. And this is why James concludes in verse 17,

Jas 2:17

Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

But, by concluding this, James is accusing Paul in Romans 4:5 of teaching a doctrine of justification by dead faith, because as James clearly teaches, faith without works is dead, being ALONE!

Jas 2:18

Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

Now, the preacher in the video would like to simply write that off as being something that men say, because God can read the heart and all. But, if God has no works from men to show why he justifies one person, but not another, then this is going to cause many to ask how they can know if God’s judgments are truly righteous if there is no real way to tell because his judicial approach lacks a proper amount of tangible evidence to support judicial decisions and to allow for a proper amount of genuine transparency. How God carries out matters of justice should inspire confidence inGod, not keep people wondering about God’s intentions as a judge. Surely, God is well aware of that, right?

Jas 2:19

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

So, if the Devils also operate by having faith without works, then James is accusing Paul’s doctrine as going only as far as the devils go in their reasoning. So, the devils being ungodly, should then be first to benefit from Romans 4:5, right?

Jas 2:20

But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

And who is that “O vain man”, but Paul? Because in the next verse, James then jumps to use Abraham to further his argument, just as Paul used Abraham back in Romans 4 to attack works as having no bearing on Abraham’s justification.

Jas 2:21

Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Now, again the preacher in the video thinks this means that Abraham was justified before men, not God, but God set this test of Abraham up, not men, so already this preacher’s interpretation is strained. He is worried that Abraham might try to glory before God, but it was God that responded about Abraham here, not mere men.

Gen 22:10

And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.

Gen 22:11

And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.

Gen 22:12

And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

But, Abraham has nothing to glory before God while God is praising him like this? Who is this preacher trying to kid. Praise like that from God means that God was impressed at what Abraham had done out of loyalty to God. And this preacher wants to rob Abraham of that glory before God when it is God basically saying that Abraham passed the test God put him through?

Jas 2:22

Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

But, by contrast, if Paul is teaching faith without works in Romans 4:5 or Ephesians 2:8-9, then Paul’s faith is not only dead, but imperfect too.

Jas 2:23

And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Because he is trying to glory before men, right preacher? Clearly, you did not read that conclusion of James carefully. You just assumed falsely that James 2 is talking about justification in the sight of men, but it is not, else James would not have concluded the above. And James is not finished, because he continues to complete the thought by saying,

Jas 2:24

Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

If James is saying this in the context of imputing righteousness, as Paul was talking in Romans 4, then this chapter in James cannot be merely justification in the sight of men. To even pretend it is is the height of silliness. Men cannot impute righteousness to your case, only a judge like God could do that.

Pastor Anderson i get it now it was revealed to me as i was watching your video works is a sign for men in what you believe in, its by Grace we are saved because we have believed on Jesus Christ, and confessed with our mouth i believe its written you cant even declare that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior without the Holy spirit. As far as sinning we will always sin until the day of our death but believers are covered under the blood of Christ. We sin less because we dont want to offend our Lord and savior but we will anyway because we are not perfect. I am saved true believers are saved because we repented changed our minds about Christ (Repent) and accepted the calling. Thank you for all that you do and i will continue to watch and be fed by you.Even though i dont live where you are you are my pastor.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,  24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,  25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,  26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus

For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. Works are great, but I don't seek to please men. If I do works for approval of men, then I have my reward.
