I’ve seen the spoils from Constantinople, including the four bronze horses on top of San Marco, in Venice. The originals are in a museum close to San Marco. Amazing!

The sack of Constantinople in 1204 was both completely unnecessary and unfortunate. I’ve never understood why the leaders who allowed it to happen thought that it was perfectly fine to rape, loot and pillage the city and its citizens when it was an important place along the land route to the Holy Land where crusaders could replenish their supplies. What did they actually think they’d accomplish?

Not the Ottoman empire, the ottoman sultanate, they became empire when Mehmet demanded recognition as rightful heir to the Palaiologian dynasty. He saw himself as a dynasty replacing the former long decaying dynasty of the Roman empire, though the differences of his court and army were deep to succeed such thing, George Trapezountios told him to unite islam with orthodoxy into a new religion and start reconquering the empire as the new Alexander the great. He did not listen as probably the influence of the muslim elite as well their priests was too great, he obviously refused to convert to christianity by the demands of the Pope, but by not solving this matter he left his successors vulnerable to converting his state into another eastern caliphate, while mehmet demanded as the Roman emperor the westerners to submit to him as he had every right(casus beli) to declare war and reunite his empire, his dreams were west into a Roman state, not east into the decaying from the Mongols muslim world.

Even the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) referred to it as Constantinople. Therefore it is Sunnah to use Constantinople.
