What is the Difference Between Wasps and Hornets?

The curious world of insects sure has more than its fair share of remarkable characters buzzing about.

Today, we’ve decided to look at two notorious flyby-shooters– wasps and hornets– that have well-earned reputations for aggression and overall nastiness. What are the similarities between the two? And, more importantly, what are the differences?

Let’s talk about it.

I must correct the narrator about bees. While honeybees can only sting once, because of their barbed stingers, bumblebee and many other species have smooth stingers and can sting multiple times, like wasps.

As I have gotten older, I really don't like killing anything. However, a couple weeks ago, I discovered a bald-face hornet nest right next to my house. They really musta built it fast, for I know a week or so before that it wasn't there. I considered if I could move it to somewhere safe, but finally realized all it could probably do is mess around and get myself stung several times. I ended up destroying it with the aid of wasp/hornet spray. I was lucky that I could spray it from a bedroom window, so I waited till night, opened a window, sprayed it down then closed the window real fast, it took a couple nights to be sure, but it worked. I hate killing, but sometimes a person has to do what they have to do.

A few years ago, I was going to place a ladder against a home I was working on, but a large planter was in my way, so I reached down and scooted it a few feet in order to place my ladder. This planter had no growth in it, but was full of dirt and had sat there all season (this was late September to early October). Damn yellow jackets has accessed beneath the dirt through the little square drain holes along the bottom. Anyway, no sooner had I moved that planter and went to position my ladder, then sting sting sting, bite bite bite, all over. Those suckers covered me up quick. I freaked the hell out and ran all the way around the house TWICE, and they stayed right with me, stinging and biting. Finally, after my second lap around the house, I ran into an open garage door on a detached building, and that immediately disoriented them, and it was over, except for a few pesky ones that had gotten into my shirt. My breathing got a little rapid and adrenaline was pumping, but I finally decided I’d survive. At best count, I received about 35 stings. Not fun. I later found out that yellow jackets go kind of crazy in the fall as the season nears end, so keep that in mind. They really get even more aggressive than in the spring and summer.

How can we know we haven't even discovered 50% of wasp species?

I’m surprised in history no one has ever just had a room full of wasp nests that was used for interrogation. “Tell us who sent you or you’re going to the wasp room”

My dad had an experience with being stung by yellow jackets around his wrist while tending flowerbed around our swimming pool. He claimed afterwards about several days it relieved his arthritis.

Hornets have a larger-displacement engine, and the wasp and hornet have different paint jobs.

Dear Narrator: Chitin is pronounced KAI-tn. If the narrator is not a live person, the person behind the AI should teach it to pronounce chitin (KAI-tn) correctly. Sigh. Modern education sucks.

I'll run like hell first, ask questions about actual species and type later.

my son, after being told that wasp will chase you but won't go around a cornor. He use to love going to Gramma's to knock the paper nests off and run like hell, go around a cornor and turn around and watch the waslps flying around not knowing where thier attacker went

I was on a picnic once when I heard a faint ripping sound. Initially I looked around but didn't locate the source. Then I spotted a yellow jacket tearing a piece of meat off a discarded chicken leg.

Can you just imagine the horrific result of a hornet evolving in Australia?

I am largely immune to common European wasp stings, due to frequent exposure in my youth.
In Europe I have never encountered wasps or hornets that behave aggressively towards humans without good reason.
Personally, I catch wasps and hornets that get into my home with my bare hands and bring them outside. They never display aggression.
People have ridiculous fears for these wonderful animals.

I’m no spring chicken and in all my years I’ve never been stung by a hornet. I’m telling you right now that in the Southeastern United States the nastiest, meanest, and most aggressive stinging type flying creature is the yellow jacket. The kind that have their nest in the ground. Their sting may not be as powerful as a hornet, but it’s plenty powerful enough. And they’ll attack you just for the helluvit. Hornets will seem docile compared to yellow jackets.

I see. My enemies. Living in the country, wasps and hornets are everpresent. Just walking near them provokes them. Its awful. I respect their ability to exist but they scare me.

Bees can sometimes sting more than once. They can do a fly by bump and sting technique that still stings and still marks you for others to attack. I know this because I was on the receiving end of such an attack.

I caught a yellowjacket in my helmet on a bike ride. She ended up stuck between my head and the helmet and nailed me several times before I could stop and get my helmet off.
I had no intrest in harming her, she was just responding in the way nature has directed. She didn't want to be stuck in my helmet any morethan I wanted her to be stuck in my helmet. I just wanted to get the helmet off so she could escape.
