I'm from Russia. Recently spent a few consecutive days in a local military commissariat, for a medical examination. Noticed quite a lot of volunteers coming to serve, every day about 4 new faces would show up. And it's a small industtial city of about a 100, 000 people, located deep into the central Russia, with no shortage of jobs, far away from the war. The county has more than a thousand cities, many 10x the size. Very roughly, for the whole country it's about 5000 volunteers a day. At least 100, 000 in a month.

Admitting Ukraine into NATO would be even worse than meaningless for the West, Alex. Since, as you rightly say, no one in NATO is going to go to war with Russia over Ukraine, then admitting Ukraine into NATO would serve only to cement the already widely-held view that NATO itself is a meaningless entity, a toothless tiger. I can't imagine why the NATO leaders would do such a foolhardy thing...

Vladimir Putin has recently said that Russia will sooner or later have to talk to the USA. Seems like this is indeed the case. While it makes no sense to talk to Europe, which has lost its sovereignty and historical memory, the US is still a very strong and dangerous enemy, with which it’s better to maintain at least some kind of dialogue.
For the sake of preserving their image, the US probably will not abandon Ukraine completely, but they may, out of their old habit, try to push this toxic asset onto Europe. After all, Europeans are no strangers to hosting refugees and bearing other costs from wars started by the USA. The suffering of Ukraine and its European allies will look like a bit of a shame for the US, but modern American elites care little about that.
