2020 Toyota 86 | Should you get the automatic or manual transmission? | Driving.ca

It's that age old question with almost any sporty car, or at least those few that still remain with the option: Should you get the automatic or manual transmission?

Not all manual transmissions are good. In fact, 2020 has its fair share manuals best left un-shifted like the Subaru Crosstrek manual and every new Honda manual that isn’t the Type R. The Toyota 86 is available with your choice of a three-pedal manual transmission or a conventional torque converter automatic, both sporting six forward gear ratios. I've had a chance to drive both versions of this car and the options are closer than you might think. Let’s start with the automatic. The six-speed autobox offered in the 86 is honestly a pretty good one. It doesn’t shift as crisply as a Volkswagen DSG but it isn’t dumb and laggy like the unit found in a Ford Edge.

In a regular car, the automatic would be a fine choice but the 86 was really designed for fun and choosing the automatic is a big hit on the old fun-o-meter. In my highly scientific estimation, the manual is 50 per cent more enjoyable to drive than the automatic. However, the manual is not without its faults either. Like any other Subaru, the shifts are somewhat rubbery and the gates can be hard to find when shifting briskly. But the cursed issue of rev hang is dealt with well — y'see Honda, it is possible — and the clutch action is excellent.

I owned a manual FR-S and now have an automatic 86. Both transmissions are excellent. Get the one you want. Don't let anyone else make the decision for you.

I've driven both the manual and automatic and I gotta say I definitely prefer the automatic. While the manual is a bit more fun, I get like 80% of the fun in the automatic in manual mode to get control of the gear shifts, but when im in traffic I can just put it in regular drive mode and relax. It's made me really enjoy the car a lot more

I bought my wife a 2019 86, an automatic and compared to my buddy’s 2013 auto, this transmission actually shifts very crisp and quick, I actually love it lmao obviously I would take the 6mt, especially considering the price difference but the AT is still just as fun!

I don't understand why people complain, there's turbo charges that makes the car surpasses 300bhp. And its an easily moddable car for sound system and sound proofing/deading for the engine noise. I'm going to buy it soon.

Actually it WAS designed from the start with a start button. Just some markets never got that version at launch. In Australia and Japan the 86 had 2 specs - a 86GT and the 86GTS. The GTS had sat nav, start button, climat controlled aircon. The GT had none of those things.

Replace the standard exhaust with a 2.5 inch system and a stage 3 tune and no more torque dip.
Best and cheapest option that worked really well for my 2018 model.

You can still purchase 2019 2020 new in Ontario ...and there’s still a few BRZ 2020 left over as well.

I want one of the 2022 models ...now I have to decide between Toyota or Subaru...

That power dip has been filled 80% but it still has a 20% dip in that same spot so while it has a band-aid, its not fixed yet.

If you get the auto put 4.88 dif gears in it. It feels like it should have come factory standard that way. And acceleration is alot better

Can’t help but find it funny when he complains about road noise. I drive a Jeep Wrangler.

Hi, I am 20 from Australia (late to getting my license) and I'm looking at getting a 86 for my first car. My biggest question right now is between Auto and Manual. So far no one in my family drives manual all auto and no one drives a sports car. I've watched plenty of videos and everyone says the 86 is a better manual car. But for someone like me he intends to drive this daily and since I enjoy photography I would be doing long drives at night or even in the day with it I don't feel I want to be bothered with a manual transmission. Plus I need to learn it. Is there any major demerits of getting it in auto? From what I can tell manual just has a better "experience" more "fun" but is that referring to people who enjoy driving manual? As someone who's never driven manual and to me it seems like a hassle would me getting the auto be a bad idea?

Well with this pandemic there's less traffic in my city. Time for a manual!

Anyone know its 0-60 time? When people say how slow it is they make it sound like its super slow.

Lol I skipped to the end because no one recommends an automatic. Sadly my wife made me get a auto cause she can't drive a stick. 😞 ... .. .. .
