Changing pickups on a guitar is a fun and rewarding project. If you are a guitar "Tinkerer" like me, pickups is often one of the first mods to do to a guitar. But is there a need to spend hundreds of dollars on new pickups? In this video, I give three reasons you may want to buy cheap pickups on ebay and amazon. Are they any good? Let's find out.

The SG Epiphone has Dragonfire Hexbucker Pickups

The Godin XTSA has No Brand P90 Pickups from ebay

The SX Strat has Dragonfire Active S Pickups

The "Kender" Partscaster Strat has a loaded pickguard from Amazon. (Fender Strat)

They are from aliexpres, it is just the same, but a different name. Yibuy pickups € 11 humbucker, changed in my Ibanez gio 170. It is a difference like day and night, much better now. I have 10 guitars, different brands and to be honest I will not buy anymore expensive pickups, because it is not worth it. I replaced it also in a partcaster i made, completely loaded pickguard also € 11.58. I love it

Well here we go everyone's going to get on you for not using their fav.brand of pickups, and there missing the point. Its about learning how to do these things on the low budget that most begining Guitarists have.Nothing wrong with telling nubies how to mod.Im sure the guys with the bucks will want to spend a little more! Great video again!Peace.

I really like the way those P-90s sound in your Godin! Another great place to get economical, high-quality pickups and wiring harnesses is Guitar Fetish. They have a wide selection, and their Kwik-Plug harnesses make installation or swapping-out a breeze. I've been curious about P-90s lately and bought a set of GFS Surf-90s to put into a cheapo Ibanez that I got in trade for a Pignose amp. Another great budget pickup brand is Wilkinson. I got a Schecter C-6 Classic in a pawn shop for $255 and it had DiMarzios in it, an Evolution at the bridge and a PAF Joe at the neck. I didn't care for the pickups, so I put in gold-covered GFS Fat Pats and now I love everything about that guitar. Total investment, about $70 for the pickups and $12 for a new five-way switch. Pickups aren't much more than bobbins, magnets and wire, and a lot of good, no, great ones are designed in Europe or the USA and made in Asia for crazy cheap prices.

I use expensive and inexpensive pickups. The inexpensive ones can be great. I would suggest good electronics as a base. That way you make an investment in pots and switches then when you change pickups you can save money.

It all depends on what you prefer. Expensive brand name or value in use.

Kennis Russell Thanks so much for ALL you do. I own and love m Dragonfire loaded pickguard, which I put into an SX a couple years ago. Glad to know fate led me to a "SOUND" decision, since I'm a newbie. I'm an old retired recording engineer/ producer - not a very good player, but I love getting great tone. You probably already know that the family-owned music store, Rondo, that brings us SX guitars also owns Agile, which are high-end (but affordable) Korean-made beauties. Back in '04, when I still had money, I bought 12 different Agiles. I still own my 2 faves. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning all you have to share. Happy Tracking!!!

I've bought a few cheap pickups already, but like you were, I don't have a guitar with the hotrails or one with P90's. Gonna buy some soon! Can't beat the prices!👍😎🎸🎶

I’ve always loved SD hot rails, about anything by SD is good. But never really cared for active pick ups, Any brand. Imho. Good video

They sound fine and all the guitars produced a nice variety of sounds in different pickup selection positions, great video :-)

Nice job! Your right about the Dragon Fire. You can some good hot pickups from them. Also Wilkinson has Chinese pickups cheap. I found some nice Epiphone Pro Buckers for cheap as a good upgrade for an SG Special. Keep up the do it yourself on a budget videos!

Planning to put a prewired Dragonfire pickguard in my Squier Strat. Bouncing between P90s and humbuckers.

You should try IronGear, best pickups for 30 bucks imo, great for modding on a budget.

There are only the right or wrong type of pickups for the guitar in question. I had an SX guitar that I had changed the pickups out of. Ended up putting the pickups from a B&CH strat that I had bought out of mahogany. I hated those pups in the new guitar, they sounded great in the SX. Conversely, the SX pups sounded great in the B&CH. Wierd but true.

Had another guitar with an SD set stock that I never bonded with tonewise.
