From Netflix and YouTube to AMC, CNBC Marathon explores the future of entertainment.

Over the past 25 years, Netflix revolutionized the film and television industry. The company amassed over 220 million subscribers across 190 countries, billions of hours watched for show Stranger Things and racked in 226 award wins. However, in 2022, things began looking rather different for the storied streamer while fighting an uphill battle to remain relevant in the streaming wars. In Q2 of 2022, Netflix lost nearly 1 million subscribers as rival Disney+ added roughly 14 million new subscribers.

Movie theaters across the U.S. and worldwide were dealt a massive blow during the pandemic. The domestic box office numbers plummeted from 2019’s box office of $11.2 billion to $3.8 billion in 2021. As for AMC Entertainment, the pandemic was chaotic. The theater company was virtually out of cash and nearly bankrupt, yet the 2021 “APE meme-stock” movement possibly saved the company.

And with more than 500 hours of video uploaded every minute and over 1 billion hours watched every day, Google’s YouTube is the world’s second largest search engine. And its meteoric growth hasn’t subsided, over 2 billion users visit the site every month. CNBC takes a look at how the video platform has changed over the past 15 years and if it can stay on top.

95% of what I watch is YouTube. Between movies, true crime, lifestyle content, finance, news and educational content it has just about everything I would want to watch.

YouTube is 100% absolutely King, especially with Premium which makes me not have to pay for Spotify by providing YouTube Music. It is a God send, just perfect

One huge thing that Youtube has that isn't mentioned in the video is the comment section! It's a great way to hear other people's experience/opinion. I almost always read the comment section after watching something I like.

I remember my first time streaming on Netflix. My family ran out of our week of CD's from the old fashion Netflix rent-a-CD and send back model.. so we tried the new-fangled streaming thing. Took 2 hours to load the movie and we said "Wow! Only 2 hours to load a whole movie instead of waiting a week for one in the mail! Technology is amazing!"

Youtube is a juggernaut is because that platform allowed anyone in the world to make their own content and have their own opinions, and also get rich off of it.

Funny that we're actually watching this on YouTube... There's no doubt who's winning the streaming war😅

I still remember watching my first show on Netflix, House of Cards, and I was thinking I could get used to watching multiple episodes all in one day. I won’t be surprised if there’s a movie or miniseries about the origins of Netflix soon

My mom, dad AND grandmom all primarily watch YouTube now. I never thought I’d see that happen. YouTube creators are the watchers as well. We’re creating our own entertainment.

I was an assistant store manager at a Blockbuster Video for some years. Not only was it the best company that I ever worked for (I had amazing benefits and incredible healthcare coverage), but once Dish network bought us out everything went downhill. I really miss it. There was something special about walking around the video store with a date or your family looking for something to watch. I love the convenience of Netflix but it just isn't the same.

The DVD Netflix home mailing ends September 2023. I dearly hope they offer the "extras" - special features such as director's commentary, behind-the-scenes, etc.

Netflix is a good product. They don't need to grow forever. Right now what they are doing works. They should aim to be profitable and become a dividend stock.

I don't think YouTube has to worry too much about TikTok anymore. A lot of countries are banning it outright from being used and distributed because it's felt by the various governments to be a national security threat from China. I personally, don't care for or use TikTok
