Schema Therapy is a therapy style that was developed to tackle pervasive patterns in our lives. In short - it helps us identify and uncover schemas or themes that we formed in response to early experiences of unmet emotional needs and this type of therapy seeks to help us learn how to operate in a healthy mode or state of being, as we learn to get our core emotional needs met in everyday life.

I swear by this therapy style. I have BPD (and Bipolar type II) and I have been treated with schema therapy for about a year now. I started with high scores on all schema themes (the 18 themes) and am now down to very low on almost all of them. Schema therapy helped me understand not only my mental illness but create understanding towards myself and how I cope and conduct myself. I am on my way towards a steady recovery and do recommend schema therapy to anyone who is willing to dig deep and really get to the bottom of things. Find a therapist you can trust and go for it, recovery is possible!

I love how you say things like “does that make sense?”, makes me feel like you’re actually talking to me and were having a real conversation, rather than just watching a video. I was in my 13th year of therapy with my 8th therapist before schema therapy was presented as a possible option for me and have made more progress in the last 2 years than the 13 before, combined. I absolutely believe that all therapy is a process, but working and struggling for that long without having the tools to actually understand or make changes is incredibly disheartening and discouraging, as you said. Hearing the words, "We're not making progress, I don't think I can help you." from even one therapist is crushing and it doesn't get easier. I know there are so many people out there who have been there and could use the tools and adaptability schema therapy provides to start/continue their process. Thank you for taking the time to make such a comprehensive introduction to schema therapy, it desperately needs more exposure. It is complicated but you always do such a great job of structuring the information so that it is digestible :)

I hope you don't mind, but I was hoping to share a bit of feedback/suggestions? I've noticed your attention to making sure we have the basic info to build off of when learning something potentially new in previous videos you've created and can't tell you how grateful I am for it. What I noticed today was that I found myself wishing the concepts/details you were listing, or calling back to, were actually written on the screen. This may just be a Me thing as I am a visual learner and often have difficulty taking in a lot of information in a short period verbally but where this is a subject I am pretty well versed in but still struggled to keep up, I thought it was worth mentioning in case it was useful to others as well. Thank you again!

Had my first session with a new therapist yesterday and she told me she wants to do schema therapy with me. I'd never heard of it before, so I've spent all day researching it. I can't believe the timing of your video! The universe is wild haha. Thanks Kati :)

Interesting to note that schema therapy has been around long before it was given the label as such. It is how countless clinicians carried out their therapies. (Integrating various therapy modalities into a personalized treatment plan for each client) great video!!

I just found out about Schema therapy today after switching mental health nurses (the new one is actually really good and knowledgeable and empathetic, my faith in humanity has been restored!!!) and I think it might be the answer for my troubles <33

Thank you for making a video about schema therapy. It's really weird that such a great and deep therapy method is not well known. I believe its because this therapy method requires a very talented therapist. I tried many therapists and many of them has a shallow CBT approach. Even one therapist who studied schema therapy didn't choose to use it. But my current therapist is great. She believes in schema therapy deeply and loves being a therapist. I made so much progress thanks to her and schema therapy. I hope this therapy method gets more popular with your video.

Been in CBT therapy for 6 years, then my therapist introduced Schema Therapy and we made so much progress so quickly.

Schema therapy followed by mindfulness based cognitive behavioral therapy helped me with my dysthymia aka chronic depression. My therapist recommended reading the self-help book based on the therapy first so that I could take more of an active role in my therapy. I believe the book is called Reinventing Your Life and it's author is the therapist who created the therapy Jefferey Young. In the book schemas are called lifetraps.

My unmet childhood need of emotional nuturing has led me to fall into a type of eating disorder (a rather non pasé appraoch to eating). I realized this recently and now I'm trying to nurture myself through meals 🖤

I have Complex PTSD and I’ve been seeing my therapist since November. She told me today that Schema therapy is the route she wants to go down. I dissociate a lot and I did today in session so I’m so glad to come across this video. You’ve been great in explaining everything. Thank you

thanks for this vid. I am getting schematherapy for attachment issues and it is soooo scary. But also feeling so good. I thank Jeffrey Young from the bottom of my heart for creating this therapy.

My therapist and I tried this form of therapy with me early on in my recovery. It wasn’t harmful for me to do it and it made me really look at the way I look at and talk to myself. For me it wasn’t this key therapy that “cured” me or “uncovered” something huge. To be honest, I didn’t really feel like it fit me well. However, going through it helped me to get to know and trust my therapist more so that I could be more open and feel safe enough to share more about my past. I think even therapeutic approaches that don’t exactly work perfectly can be beneficial if you have the right therapist.

Well explained thank you. I’m just starting out on schema therapy and it’s resonating with me and explains a lot and I feel like instead of not knowing why I feel suicidal when friends don’t include me in their plans I know now what schema is being triggered here, why I react so intensely and how to come to a more healthier way of thinking and therefore react differently and therefore live a less intense and more peaceful way that allows me to feel joy again.
