Tesla Semi - Production & deliveries continue. These clean tesla semi’s are beauty & the beast in one package. - Zanegler

Jaan of the Universe just became one of first ever "regular" people to ride along in a driving Tesla Semi! Here's a thread on new details I learned 🧵: 1. Tesla Semi is already fully ready for European roads as it is now! YES, the cab fits, with new regulation. They only had to...

The Tesla Semi program is arguably one of the most intriguing within the scope of the company in recent memory. But it’s only getting started. During the IAA Transport Show in Germany today, the Semi’s Head of Engineering, Dan Priestley, unloaded tons of new details on the vehicle, including plans to leverage several different variants of the electric truck, how its efficiency stacks up, and various Easter eggs that the company has discovered through its fleet operation thus far.

Tesla Semi has officially made its international debut in Germany, participating in one of the world’s most prestigious automotive trade fairs. Enthusiasts and industry experts are flocking to Tesla’s conspicuous full booth, eager to delve into the latest developments surrounding this revolutionary vehicle.

The first images of the Tesla Semi at the 2024 IAA Transportation trade show in Hannover, Germany, have been shared online. The event will be held from September 17 to 22, 2024, and it will feature a couple of talks with Tesla Semi program Senior Manager Dan Priestley about the Class 8 all-electric truck. While the 2024 IAA Transportation trade show has not yet started, it appears that the event’s exhibitors are already busy setting up their own booths at the trade fair. This was true for Tesla, whose booth is dominated by a Tesla Semi accompanied by a Megacharger.

It's 100 kWh per 100 km, not 100 miles. That's consistent with the <1.7 kWh per mile figure Tesla gave earlier.

Excellent update. The only question I have is one that you have already addressed (albeit with your honest answer, "I don't know.")

I, too, wonder why full production of the semi has been delayed for so long. I'm glad you didn't give the usual B.S. answer of, "Tesla have been working out the final design details through their pilot program with Pepsi." I've never bought this answer. What other vehicle has Tesla tested for six years before entering full production?

Was it battery supply? I find that reason more plausible, but that would just be a guess. I just hope that starting construction of the factory in Nevada means that it's finally happening in 2025 and that we don't have to wait another six years. This project could have out-sized benefits for the electrification of our transportation infrastructure. Not to mention Tesla share price

Great show guys.
I'd add two points:
1. Currently light on charging infrastructure, limiting it to...company lots (I forget the nifty name). What about some key truck stops or something? What would that look like? Charger would require a megapack. What is the total cost for one installation? I would assume it would be in the millions because megapack, which is much higher than current car locations. Who would pay for it?
2. 4680 batteries are used. Perhaps re-show the current ramp and where it would need to be if Tesla did indeed make 50k of the semis in one calendar year.

Cheers

EV semis open the door to an entirely different kind of manufacturing / processing / assembly plants. Trucks can drive into a facility without having to reserve trailer-length spaces in front of each loading / unloading bay. Loads destined for specific areas of a facility can be driven to the most distance-efficient location and unloaded, robotically, in controlled climate controlled, secure areas. If necessary, unhitched trailers can be left indoors and unpacked as needed. Trucks could deliver raw materials in a single door and exit with finished goods from another single door or even the same one, though safety concerns would likely prohibit that.

Long haul trucking is what keeps the railway companies honest in their hauling rates. Interesting!

Next enabler it would seem is upgrading the commercial (truck-stop) charging network. That means whatever they call the charge systems for these beasts, they need to get to where they can pump those out like they do Super Charger for their commercial customers; gotta have both to get the sales.

Hey, just a note on your Semi range. The EU presentation was all in KM per KW not Miles per KW. They are in Europe so they switched to their measurement systems.

Chase Barber from Edison Motors said one of the truckers he let drive Topsy the HE-Semi, punched him in the chest and said, “You SOB, you made me hate my truck!” 😎

My understanding from memory: Pepsi averaged 1.6 kwh/mile heavy and 1.3 medium wt.
(and I thought Elon's target a yr or so ago of 1.7 was fantasy)

Tesla semis could be driven inside the building / warehouse ??? That could be very beneficial. Tesla should be making a line of electric fork lifts ... with FSD

Megawatt charging infrastructure will be a challenge. Just getting connected to the grid will take time, and it needs to be part of the planning several years in advance.

Imagine if he Semi business was a single standalone company and no ties to Tesla. What would the market price this at? Having already a BIG company like Pepsi and a pipeline with others...
