Input Vs. Output

Can you always tell the difference between inputs and outputs on your computer or home theater device? Are the plugs any different?

@RedSpectrumPictures - There's a separate pin for the input on 3.5mm headsets. You'll notice 3 rings instead of two on those connections. While the port itself may be multipurpose, there are two outputs (stereo) and an input (mono).

TRS (stereo 1/4") cables sometimes send data both ways. For example, on an audio mixer for live performance, usually each channel has an "I/O" port. This port is for analog effects. The information from that channel is sent to the effects unit, then from the effects unit back to the mixer using a single TRS cable. It can do this because TRS uses 2 separate signals at the same time; notice the 2 lines at the tip of a TRS (stereo 1/4") cable (typically used to send left and right audio signals.)

OK, but what if I'm buying a gaming pc and want to connect it to my flatscreen via hdmi cable like you would with a console? Would the audio transfer? I feel like it's yes, but I wanna double-check

You can have input and output at the same time, for example when recording with a USB or 3.5mm microphone into a computer, you can choose to have whats being recorded outputed into audio through the speakers or headphones. :)

Aren't most cables considered double-male. Like a usb cable from computer to printer, prong on each end so double male. Just like almost any other cable?
