In this video, we’re going to talk about the ketogenic diet and MSG (monosodium glutamate). 

Will MSG knock you out of ketosis? YES. 

What is MSG?
MSG is a flavor enhancer. It’s meant to make food taste better than it really is. 

Foods with MSG will typically make you hungry again about an hour later

MSG side effects:

• Headaches
• Itchiness
• Blood pressure problems 
• Nausea
• Fluid retention
• Sleepiness

MSG is in many different foods. But, it’s not typically listed as monosodium glutamate anymore. Instead, it’s listed as modified food starch or modified corn starch. 

Foods high in MSG:

• Chips 
• Fast food
• Soup
• Ramen noodles
• Deli meat 
• Cottage cheese (unless organic)
• Chinese restaurant foods

The health effects of MSG:

1. Causes type 2 diabetes in mice studies
2. High doses in small rodents increase body weight and fat mass
3. Oxidative damage to the brain, kidney, and thymus (destroys the nervous system)
4. Induces learning and memory deficits as well as destroys the retina 

Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio:

The only way I regained my health was not eating anything processed or packaged. MSG should be banned! The American public should demand exact labeling! Sometimes it's labeled as "natural flavors".

My biggest worry about MSG is that it stimulates inflammation. We use it in the lab to study inflammatory conditions.

I use Cavendar's Greek Seasoning, that has MSG in it, I use it sparingly, it does not throw me out of ketosis.

Absolutely. I just had Lipton chicken noodle soup before bedtime and now it’s 3:30 in the morning and I’m wondering why I can’t get any sleep.

Whenever I eat MSG I get racing thoughts and anxiety. I even got really intense nerve pains in my neck!

I am extremely sensitive to MSG. Symptoms include severe brain fog, fatigue, memory problems and a sense of impending doom, almost like a panic attack. I feel restless, like I don’t want to be in my own body. Symptoms start minutes after I taste the food and last up to 72 hrs. I had suffered for years but after doing an elimination diet, I was able to identify the trigger foods. I avoid processed foods but sometimes I can’t control what I consume when eating out. I have found that Vit B6 helps to soothe some of the symptoms.

I know people swear that it has no effect on the human body, but for my body, I retain fluid and I feel really gross for about 24 hours. I try to avoid it. As good as it makes the food taste, for me, it’s not worth feeling bad afterwards.

Always have puffy eyes and feel like I have a hangover the day after eating foods with MSG. I have now removed it from my diet.

Both MSG and Aspartame cause me to have migraines, inflammation, water retention and post nasal drip.

I get a headache almost immediately if I consume anything with MSG.

There are studies about MSG, no effects like described here. If you are not familiar with spicy foods, there you got your symptoms!
Never had any problem with MSG, but didn't know it knocks you out of ketosis. Damn, need to avoid now. :)

You don't tell us why it will knock you out of ketosis? Or what quantity? only what it is in it and what it does to rodents. MSG is natural in many keto foods that obviously don't knock you out.

I used to eat crisps (chips) and get headaches. I used to think it was the salt. But nowadays when I have just pure himalayan salt with water I have no headaches. Even when I do alot of it at once.

I've been on Keto for almost a year with great success. I was very strict the first 6 months but then started "cheating" at my Harris Teeter (grocery) Asian Hot Bar once a week. Just meat and vegetables "keto friendly" foods but we have to be careful how it is PREPARED! I'm convinced it contains a lot of MSG because I have many of the above symptoms the next day, as well as getting knocked out of ketosis. So I'm strengthening my resolve to NEVER.NEVER.NEVER eat prepared foods outside of my home!

My husband gets migraines from MSG. He also avoids nitrates and nitrites.

I work at a fast food chicken place. I ate the chicken without batter and grilled it. I started seeing my weight loss ending and putting weight back on. Then I found out they marinade the chicken in salt and MSG.

You asked how MSG effects our body, MSG and other additives, preservatives, declumping agents, along with other things, even just regular food such as oatmeal, bread of any kind, nuts other than peanuts causes my muscles to stop working to the point of total paralysis. When this happens the effect can get so bad I have to be admitted into the hospital. My chest muscles stop moving letting my lungs to fully expand. I have to get a catheter put in and someone has to stay with me at all times "usually my husband" to feed me and turn me every few hours. The last time was about a 3day stay. When I start to get movement back and are able to urinate on my own I get to go home but someone has to stay with me and I use an electric wheelchair sometimes for several days. I've only had about 6 of those reactions that make it necessary to stay in the hospital. These happened during my learning span. It took me over eight years to figure out that it was food. I started eating just fresh fruits and vegetables. I have been able to eat real butter, eggs, and fresh ground peanut butter. I can use olive oil, peanut oil, and coconut oil. My lightest reactions are headaches, IBS, muscle weakness (still sever) inability to get my eyes to focus, and feeling as if the flu is coming on without the nasal congestion. I'm sorry I did not mean for this to be so long.

We should call for our government to ban msg and high frutose corn syrup asap.
