I think another important aspect is when you perform poorly or make a bad play, or even when your team makes a bad play - understanding why it was bad and what you can do to avoid that situation will help. It's all a gradual process, learning macro and discipline in your games will help far more than sick skills on a particular champion.

Gold and silver players don’t understand the WHY, they don’t understand why something was a good or bad play, they don’t understand why they should be doing certain things, etc. all they see is results. If they make a horrible super risky low value play that would ordinarily throw the entire game, but it happens to work out and they get a triple because the enemy team also sucks, then they’ll think it was a good play. And on the other end, they might make a good play, but have no teammates do easy follow up or the fight doesn’t work out regardless of their individual play given it’s a 5v5 and not 1v5 game, and they’ll think they did a bad play. You gotta learn the basics, and you gotta learn the reason WHY you do certain things.

Edit: this is also the reason so many players get stuck around plat and emerald because they see their mechanics improving and think they deserve high elo, but they still aren’t grasping the whys yet.

Im not really good at League (hardstuck emerald 4) but as a former Starcraft 2 player this tip is REALLY IMPORTANT. You can micro one unit perfectly, and yet the player who has 5 units in that same time will ALWAYS beat you.
Macro beats micro every time, everywhere. You win battles with micro, you win the war with macro.

To help visualize it for all… 3 people who see this.

League is not about the plays but the setup to the plays. Many of the big teamfights in teamfights have a lot of setup that go into them, and the team that wins usually isn’t the more mechanically gifted team (otherwise faker wins everytime) but instead it’s the team who set up better. There are so many different tp plays in pro play that only worked because somebody put vision in the backline and the other team didn’t clear it.

This is part of the reason why Vel’koz is good in lower elos. The way the character is designed is to kinda force you to prepare for teamfights, same with Heimerdinger. They don’t make huge plays without proper setup 90% of the time, so these characters are subtly forcing you to play good in order to do good on the character. League isn’t rocket league where mechanical outplays roam supreme, League is more like chess, taking minor advantages before choking the enemy team from all resources. It’s a slow paced, tactful, minor advantage driven game. Why are snowballs a thing? Because of a slow build up to an eventual barreling behemoth.

As someone that has had problems with being stuck low master having being on the verge of chall before, and actually getting stuck when playing other roles on different accounts, I've only had consistent success with playing for one thing; getting a lead.

Nothing else is consistently good for climbing and it doesn't matter the rank or how "good" you are. If you dont have a way to consistently have an outsized impact on the game then you are where you deserve to be and deserve to be stuck.

lol, I'm the complete opposite. In 2020, I decided I wanted play ranked to gold to get a victorious skin (victorious lucian baybey let's go) but I'm not very skilled mechanically (and I smoke a lot of weed so my reaction time isn't great). Instead I focused entirely on improving my cs per minute (went from ~6 to ~9 over the course of the year) and just playing smarter, warding better and knowing my champ pool (fiora, nasus & darius). Working on fundamentals is also way, way easier than trying to get better at pressing a million buttons really fast to do a fancy combo.

The difference between "knowing your champ" and "knowing the game" is a complete bridge not enough players realize. I've been in low play for a while now and nothing scares me less than when I face a guy with like 150 masteries on their champions, because there is no way that, with a champ you should be able to play while sleeping, you'd be this low if you knew what you were doing.

If you're iron or bronze, just looking at the map constantly makes you one division higher. It's crazy how map awareness in this game is very lack luster.

To be fair that's because this is what they're being told, especially when they ask the meme question "how do I rank up with bad teammates?" They'll say "YOU HAVE TO L9 20/0 HYPER CARRY YOUR TEAM BRO ." Not many people do what azzapp does and says "just make one improvement at a time in your macro and you'll climb over time"

The unfortunate thing about Gold and below is its ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to 1v9. Which is precisely why shitter players try to pick up these high level mechanics.

Macro means absolutely nothing when the other 9 people in the game are playing team deathmatch running around wherever the wind takes them.

Your best bet getting out of gold is playing top, running a crutch champ like Sett where you can turn mistakes into advantages, run hullbreaker and split all game.

Pinging is like the highest thing that I wish people would learn. I can't be looking at the map all the time, so a warning that your laner is missing, or that you're on your way is always helpful. I've noticed that ganks are definitely easier if you ping in advance

It's good to notice your mechanical failings, but people focus on them too much. Sometimes the answer to your death is "The enemy's numbers were too big for me", and digging into that reveals the biggest, most important points.

Why were their numbers bigger? Because they out itemed, because they outfarmed. And then you figure out how you can prevent that from happening.

Everything, needs to be looked at, but people want to just skip the whole boring "click on minions, get gold, prevent enemy from clicking minions, no gold for them", because it doesn't directly create that sick image they have in their mind of amazing plays where the crowd cheers.

This mentality of fame chasing only ever works if you're so amazing mechanically that you're essentially superhuman, which sadly comes out to "do you have the proper genes". The true way to get better is the same way you get better at anything, the same way you learn the trade you do for a living.

You methodically take apart every element that composes the task, inspect them individually, figure out priorities, learn how to do each thing, then learn how to string them together. You aim for consistency, because you don't want to gave one kickass day at work and then shit yourself the rest of the year. You'd rather do decent or pretty well every day.

My biggest problem was definitely not knowing other champions abilities properly, passives and cooldowns etc. The seasons I played most you would buy champions with essence and tokens (not sure if it's still like this ) and it would take forever.

I've always been saying that league players are so much overfocused on micro and they always completely ignore macro.
The best example of this is that every time they feel like they are better player than somebody else and he doesn't believe that they immediately say "1v1"

krzysztofputerko

That's so true. Most feel komfortable with being in lane and only think about mechanics. When it's time to teamfights after 15+ min they completely colapse because they got zero macro. Macro is the king.
