'Until you read it yourself, you will never understand a book in a thousand Youtube commentaries'

something I took from the art of war and boxing is the act of leaving an out for your opponent, in the art of war, he says, if you surround your enemy they will fight to the death, but if you leave them an out they will take the out. if you get the better of someone in a fight, and you jump on them they have nothing to lose and will go all out, the key is to get the better of them and keep your distance, keep tagging them, keep your composer, and they wont get brave and if they do they will miss since u are staying back.

One of Sun Tzu's principle in Chinese version was 'to use the LEAST asset and resource to win a battle or to complete a mission', which is the opposite of the Western that is 'to inflict maximum damage possible to prevent opponent to recover'. This is a very HUGE difference.

Stay calm, collected, humble, and don't ever act on emotion. This will drive your opponent nuts and they will threaten you with the weirdest, nuttiest threats which then expose their motive, their strategy and their character. Throw them off with kindness, use logic, be innocent and it will drive them even crazier. You will see every move they think they can make and you've not exposed anything about yourself because you're better than that, you don't want war in the first place and therefore you won't need it if you use this method. They will have taken themselves out.

The art of war only made sense to me when I was placed in a leadership role in a private company: handling people, and planning and executing of project to completion. Now working in an international company meeting with different culture, sure did gives insight to protect my own interest, and knowing the other people's interest which maybe beneficial or harmful. PS. I keep listening to the audiobook version.

What an excellent explanation. As silly as it may sound, the first time I read the Art of War, I didn’t really understand it. Then I decided to watch a Chinese show called Three Kingdoms (based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms books, which are a romantic retelling of the Three Kingdoms period). Although the Art of War predates the Three Kingdoms era by 700 years, the context I gained from Three Kingdoms made the Art of War much more understandable and helped me appreciate its brilliance and after reading the Art of War I was able to appreciate Three Kingdoms more. They complemented each other perfectly.

I enjoyed listening to your explanations, though haven't read "The Art of War", but you made it so clear. I would like to add to your elaborations that to the Chinese, Sun Tzu's teaching of 13 chapters is embodied in their daily lives, not only in wars but in martial arts, in social relationships, in conducting their livelihood, cultivating agriculture, Feng Shui, house construction. Sun Tzu's teaching contains stratagems to conduct life to gain happiness, peace, and prosperity as well.

I can't remember where I heard it but it was during my military service when we discussed SunTzu and Clausewitz when we were talking bout maskirovka, and one of our NCOs mentioned that Clausewitz had a problem with alcohol and could have been drunk when he wrote that book, thus the contradictions.

Thank you for the parable of Mr Kong. As an avid reader of The Art of War, the example you have given clarified what Master Sun meant by 'attack the stratagem' very well.

Great review and analysis of this book... I recently bought it for my 11 year old son🙂... we read it and analysed it together, trying to explain the meanings and teachings to apply on his current and future life ( and mine!)... your video makes it so much easier and clear!🙂 Thank you so much for your brilliant work🙏

The irony is that to be a humanitarian or peace negotiator, you must understand the strategy of war and incentives that lead to fighting.

Having read the Art of War I was struck by ho Machiavellian it is. With its emphasis on deception and misleading and throwing the enemy off guard. And it's strange that Machiavelli himself wrote a book with the very same title.

The full understanding of Tsun's book actually comes from the more direct and poetic translation ... if yor mind is flexible enough on language, and unfortunately we in the west are most trained to seek single meanings from text. Like for Lao tze, and Chuang tze, there are complete and overlapping ...levels of comprehension.
Theyre truly literary masterworks as fine as Shakespeare and Melville.

I read “The Art of War: Accurately Conveyed Edition” on Kindle and it is the most appropriately translated version ever. For example, it translated one of the five elements for victory "天时" into “Whether”, which is appropriate, rather than “Heaven” in other editions.
The author has another book about the application in modern times.

The visual example with Mr. Kong was super helpful and made it easy to better understand stratagems! Thank you. :)
