"His tone is impossible to find, too many knobs"

The most vanilla bass tone you've ever heard:

Rest in Peace Phil. Thanks for the music.

Fun fact! Most of those knobs are for controlling the where the signals are sent! When the Dead had the wall of sound (a wall of several thousand speakers) Phil could send the signal from each pickup to a different set of speakers!

'I've not seen that many knobheads since Millwall last came to Valley Parade'

As a Palace supporting behs player, that made me chuckle

RIP Phil. Bass tone is more about the technique and fingers than the gear. Same with guitar, but even more so with bass.

This is definitely not the tone people were asking for, but it is Phil I guess.

Funny he played an EB3 in the early days of the Dead so that’s spot on

That guitar has more knobs than Jerry Garcia had fingers

From 6/20/69 to 6/21/71, Phil played a paisley red Gibson EB3. Here's some specs about his rig during this era:

Pickups: Hagstrom BiSonics with preamps. Probably similar to Alembic Blaster.
Strings: Pyramid Gold
Amp: 4 Fender Showmen with milspec 6L6 tubes. The ones to get are the Philips 7581As. NOS. It makes a difference. Back in those days, the crew used to go down to LA and go to military auctions and buy them by the palette. At some point I might try the 7581A reissues.
Speakers: 4 Sunn 200S with JBL D140s. They are actually identical to K140s except for the cones. K140s are an acceptable substitute to my ears.

I remember getting a good chuckle when reading Spin magazine's review of a Dead album in which they called him Phil "a wandering bass man am I" Lesh.

I feel a better example of his Tone would maybe be his Solo in Eyes of the World from the live Album "One From the Vault" from August 13, 1975.

That’s too easy, give us Phil’s Alembic tone- that’ll test ya!

Very cool to see you tackle this. I taught myself some electrical engineering to make a circuit similar to what's in that bass (state variable filter)
