Fun fact, a 1955 film by Edvin Laine, was made in a similar way. Ww2 vets were enlisted as Edvin was one himself, and real archival footage was dispersed in with the movie footage to make it realistic. Many still think 'Tuntematon Sotilas' is one of the greatest Finnish war films. Also, an actor named Reino Tolvanen was cast, both because he was a veteran, and because of his distinct dialect.

it’s gotta be insane acting in a movie about something you actually did irl

One thing to remember too is that the movie was made in 1929-1930. The Great War was still very fresh in everyone’s mind. It’s like if we got veterans to consult on a movie about the GWOT in either Iraq or Afghanistan.

I hope that in some small way, working with the movie may have alleviated some of their PTSD.

Edit: I don’t want to discredit responses, but understand that PTSD is variable. Some endure alone. Some seek help. Too many don’t realize/understand how to feel.
Too many Veterans (from all conflicts) deal with it in isolation, even with family around. Far too many each day decide to end their struggle prematurely.
If you know a Veteran, reach out. Doesn’t matter if you agree with what they fought for. As a person, treat them as a person who may need an anchor right now!
They did what they believed was right at the time;be the friend or person to step up and help someone today!

The scene where the French guy is grabbing the barbedwire and an artillery shell hits and all that is left is his hands was a real memory of of the German soldiers and I think about the unknown Frenchman whose death we are talking about over a hundred years later at least I am

A German Mini-Series from the late 1950's did the same thing. It's called 08/15 and it's the German WW2 Band of Brothers.

This is such a disturbing film it’s comforting to know it’s actually filmed in sunny rural California.

It's really cool that some these original world War one Germans actually demonstrated for us What it was like to charge into no man's land and fight in the trenches.

There will never be a more accurate portrayal in film of this. Not now the veterans are gone

The author was a german veteran Eric Maria Remarque. He wrote a few books, one of which was called "The Road Back", the sequel to All Quiet. He was a best selling author who married the movie star Paulette Godard.

The original movie was better than the remake by a large margin.

The 1930 film All Quiet on the Western Front also has a sequel movie The Road Back. Paul and the others are already dead and Tjaden is the only recurring character from the All Quiet. There's an uploaded video of that here in YouTube.

It's better than the Netflix tragedy that made us listen to inception horn.

My grandfather fought the french ... and he fought the russians. He died in Stalingrad in hand to hand combat. Just thinking about the fact that his whole life was just about two great wars is crazy to me ... the baby boomer generation of the west was kinda blessed after WWII. The generations after were kinda lucky in comparision. Let's hope that we don't see a full blown third one...
