Haiti paying for "Independence" is like me paying in the store shop for goods, then giving it back to the store shop.

I wrote a paper in college about the difference between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is hard to believe that the same Spanish that held the inquisition did the DR better than France did Haiti.

Ok, this may sound stupid, but if it was too costly for France to invade why didn't Haiti leverage this to pay little or no debt? Were the leaders at the time not aware of the situation?

And some years later, Haiti had the idea to conquer the Dominican Republic and make the Dominicans pay for the indemnity.

I believe the cost had to do with the massacre of all remaining French in 1804 including women and children.

You don't hear this about other countries it normally only England being bashed. And yet we paid to end slavery and the debt only ended in 2018.

Haiti has been independent for a looong time. The current state is due to mismanagement.

Caribbean historians generally have the same take away that Haiti got their independence too soon.

In Vietnam, we politely fired upon a french base with artillery that they politely built in a middle of a valley called Dien Bien Phu before we politely tell them where the door is. That’s how we avoided debt!

Dont make excuses for that failed state. Corruption at its heart. Why is the Dominican republic so different?

In the 50’s, Haiti and the Dominican Republic had a similar economic status, the Haitians even doing slightly better. Around this time, both countries had dictators as well. One country progressed and became a tourist hotspot and the other a failed state, all due to the difference in leadership. They share the same island. The French extortion was wrong, but it’s not why Haiti is the way it is today.

Can't imagine the Haitian Revolution from 1791 did them any favours. The manner in which it was conducted rendered the young nation's plantations and towns devastated by 1804. The constant massacres of its white and mulatto population led to a severe lack of skilled planners, craftsmen and administrators. They even had to force former slaves to return to work on plantations.
They even conquered Santo Domingo... didn't treat their neighbors any better...they pillaged church property, food and all other supplies.
In the end, no one really recognized their 1804 independence, so no trade, no revenue. When the return to slavery didn't work they agreed to pay France the indemnity just to be recognised as an independent state in 1825. So finally trade could come in from other powers albeit slowly. However, it would continue to be an unstable state until the US started encroaching on its interests in the 1890's

A lot of French African former colonies also suffer such thing until today. My country - Vietnam - is also a formerFrench colony. Fortunately, we don't have to pay it in cash, but unfortunately, in blood.

The Haitians didn't do themselves any favors by immediately making it illegal for non-Haitians to own land in Haiti. Effectively shutting themselves off from receiving any foreign investment.

Haiti could have zero debt to anyone and would still be in the mess they are today. 219 years of "freedom" and the best they got is mud cookies.
